Liberal groups are mounting a major offensive against President Trumps Supreme Court pick, hoping to pressure every Democratic senator to vote against whomever the White House nominates to succeed Justice Anthony Kennedy.
With Republicans clinging to a 50-49 voting majority given Sen. John McCains (R-Ariz.) battle with brain cancer, Democrats also hope to pick off two Republican votes to stall Trumps nominee.
The biggest targets are Sens. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) and Susan Collins (Maine), two Republican women who support abortion rights.
But the odds are long.
Murkowski and Collins backed Trumps last pick for the court, Neil Gorsuch, even though he was seen as a likely vote against abortion rights.
In addition, a handful of Democratic senators Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.), Joe Manchin (W.Va.) and Joe Donnelly (Ind.) also backed Gorsuch and will face enormous pressure to do so again given their reelection races in states easily won by Trump in the last presidential election.
All five swing senators met with Trump at the White House Thursday in a sign of the heavy lobbying to come.

(51,593 posts)get them in their home towns. Indivisible has a plan and it is the same as with the ACA...bombard them with calls, letters, town halls, and DO NOT STOP! We have to keep the Dems that are iffy...Donnelly, Heitkamp, Manchin and give the GOP the facts (without their help their constituents sill bail on them). We have to try to convince Flake and Corker along with Murkowski and Collins. We need to convince them that a president involved in an investigation cannot appoint a justice since it is a clear conflict of interest and possible obstruction of justice since they will rule on decisions involved in the case. No justice should be picked until after the investigation is complete and if one is chosen he must recuse himself. Between that and the abortion and immigration issues the GOP should not be able to appoint a justice until after the midterms at the very least. I say go for the argument of NO JUSTICE until after investigation.
