Met a full blown MAGAt in Manhattan today (close to where I live)

My wife and son are in Japan so my son can go to Kindergarten for 5 weeks to improve his Japanese (wife is from Kobe).

I go to a bar for brunch nearby and sit at the counter. Then a lady about 60 years old who has definitely done a fair amount of plastic surgery sits right next to me (45) even though there are many other open seats at the bar. I keep to myself and she finally finds an excuse to talk to me regarding the world cup. I chat with her sympathetically because she seems lonely. I can also tell that she thinks she is hot fucking shit (there is a fair amount of confidence that she has in her plastic surger-ied look), but I placate her while I eat my food and have my brunch drink.

She talks a lot....she dings De Blasio as being a corrupt guy in the back pocket of real estate developers trying to diminish NYC real estate value by allowing excessive development. I nod a lot because I don't realllly want to talk to her. She talks about having been in finance. Eventually, I admit that I work in the hedge fund industry and we exchange a few war stories. She mentions that I should try to work at Renaissance Technologies because of my advanced mathematics degree...I tell her I can't because they have a policy of not hiring anyone with Wall st experience...and besides, i think Robert Mercer is scum because of the destruction he brought to our country in the form of tr*mp. Then she indicates, "now you know how we felt about Bill and Hillary - and Obama!" Blah blah blah....I told her I'm not emotionally attached to Bill/Hillary/Obama, but that tr*mp is a fucking fascist and a piece of shit and should be <redacted>. I say he lacks the requisite intellect to be a president...then she goes off on what an incredible genius he is - beyond comprehension which is something you people will never understand blah blah - we finally got someone who will be the greatest president in this country's history! Then she says "She is opposed to sexism, bigotry, and racism which is why I voted for Donald Trump. He tells it like it is to your face and he will knock you right down. You cannot compete with him!" Sadly, I cannot say she is a totally stupid person - she has some intellect of sorts, but she is all the way brainwashed. Her statement, however, was too much for me to swallow. There is no reasonable response to this.

I quietly stood up. "Look, I only spoke to you because you seemed lonely and a little pathetic and I was just trying to be nice. I was not really interested." This set her off to berzerk-o land. I had already paid, so I simply walked away without uttering another word while she was ranting and raving at me really loudly while sitting in her bar stool.

I thought living in NYC would make me immune from that shit!

I live in California and my town is a bright red blip on an otherwise blue state. With all the Blue Lives Matter and Trump / MAGA flags and bumper stickers flying from cars you'd think it is rural Alabama.

I knew a few people like that, but they were in the minority. I feel like I can even picture her, because women like that were such a distinct NYC-UES type. The excessive preoccupation with looks, the conservative mindset, the desperate loneliness. In a way, I almost feel sorry for them, but they kind of bring it on themselves.

I've had 2 strangers engage me in conversation recently, and while they never mentioned Trump, one was in Walmart begging for a racist comment, and the other, a postal employee, mentioned a liberal TV host in a totally innocuous manner, as if to see what I would say. I didn't take the bait in either case. I retreated to common middle of the road and let it drop. I'm just doing my daily life, don't have to turn it into a litmus test.

They say things - overheard or intended - that make you want to return them to grade school as "defective - unable to process information in any rational manner".
Driven more by irrational fears than any sort of fact or logic. Something somebody said in a movie 20 years ago means more to them than any rational fact or law. Scared to death of anyone who appears different to them and expects equal/decent treatment. And, as you experienced, flabbergasted that you do not think exactly like them.

31. After spending over two weeks in the deep south....

....I was surprised to find little outward redneck regalia on display. Only a couple of Confederate flags. Not nearly as much MAGA crap as I expected. Not overwhelmed by offensive bumper decorations.

There is much more of that crap outwardly visible in rural parts of Oregon...flags on pickups, offensive reader boards in front of small-town businesses..

I am uncomfortable driving through parts of southern Oregon. Remnants of the once-powerful KKK are still making noise there.

Tomorrow, I drive through the Idaho panhandle. We'll see how the Neo-Nazis there are behaving.

Anyone else confirm my observations?

Wasn’t really in the mood to be hit on - I prefer my wife whom I brought up a lot - and she tried to convince me my wife is manipulative and no good based on almost no info! Other details I left out, etc.

I am appalled at her persona which is why it is easy to be a little rough around the edges.
