They aren’t in a position to replace lost supply fro Iran/etc.

The Saudis, OTOH, have significant spare capacity.

Where this is a mistake is that if $80 oil were a certainty, the US could add that much within a year.

Getting SA to increase production would lower prices at the pump going into the midterms. That is not a stupid strategy.

U.S. Senate Democrats on Wednesday urged President Donald Trump to try to prod OPEC to take steps to lower oil prices and suggested that millions of Americans will see tax cut proceeds canceled out by higher fuel costs.

Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer held a news conference at a Capitol Hill Exxon station to criticize Trump for not doing more to lower fuel costs and said that gasoline prices had jumped 25 percent since Trump took office in January 2017.

because it knows Iran won't have many other countries willing to defy the American sanctions. According to this, India is the second largest importer, and I think they'll do what Trump wants - Modi is somewhat like Trump, and I think he'd rather hurt a regional rival than stand up for them - while China sees the USA as its rival, not Iran.

Of course, Trump might give China some other concession if they agree to boycott Iran. Lifting all sanctions on North Korea, for instance, and giving them a free hand in the South China Sea.

See, for instance:

India’s Biggest Bank To Stop Handling Iran Oil Payments

India’s largest bank, State Bank of India, has told local refiners that it will no longer handle payments for oil imports from Iran beginning in November, the head of finance at Indian Oil Corp (IOC) told Reuters on Friday.
...
“Once the current payment channel is blocked, supplier [Iran] has to decide if it wants to trade with us in rupee or sell oil on credit in anticipation of channels re-opening in future.”
...
India is Iran’s second single biggest customer after China. India’s oil import from Iran jumped last month to their highest since October 2016 to around 705,000 bpd, but expectations are that Indian imports will start dropping from this month because at least two large refiners are said to be getting ready to cut imports from Iran.

Nayara Energy—formerly known as Essar Oil—is said to have started scaling back oil purchases from Iran this month, while another big Indian refiner, Reliance Industries, which owns the world’s largest refining hub and has significant exposure to the U.S. financial system, is reportedly planning to stop importing oil from Iran in October or November.

Trumpy always lies. Why doesn't the public accept this yet? Why does Trumpy still garner an iota of credibility. We know how many times he's lied while in office. The numbers are there for anyone to see. But EVERY time he's quoted, the assumption is that he's telling the truth. But he has no moorings in the truth. If he says something that's true, it's only by coincidence, or because he can make money off it.

Trumpy is a fascist dictator who will cause suffering, pain, and even death if it favors HIM. He's joined with Putin, Turkey, NK, and any nation run by dictators. He's the 21st century version of Mussolini, who kissed Hitler's ass, just as Trumpy kisses Putin's ass. Trumpy is part of the new Axis power pact. He'll do all he can to dissolve the old Allied associations because he's NOT interested in democracy. And yes, he'll destroy our Constitutional form of government in a heartbeat, while the GOP leadership is fingering their collective asshole. Ooo. They're SO terrified.

So to distract from the news that his Iranian policy is pushing up the price of oil, he invents a lie that he's working to bring it down.

They fall for it because they love him for his bigotry, and then need to find excuses to keep their faith in him.

Average prices have crept back up over $3 after hovering in the low $2 range for a few years. A problem he created. So he calls his Saudi buddies who love drumpf because Kushner went there and gave them our intelligence on enemies of the Royal family, so they could round them up.

So to summarize....

Create crisis in Iran because he is jealous of Obama.

Give away state secrets to Saudis

Destabilize oil markets

Call Saudi’s for more oil

Somehow come out of this looking like a hero for hastily trying to cover up hid own fuck ups.

I thought I read somewhere that oil needed to be at least $75/barrel to make domestic (and Russian) production profitable. Which is a few years ago OPEC increased production to drive down prices. This resulted in a great many layoffs in the US and hurt the Russian economy. It just seems odd that 45 would do something to hurt two of his BFFs--big oil and big Russia.

They need the higher oil prices for whenever they issue the IPO. It's not to their benefit to increase production and lower oil prices. Which lower oil prices only hurts US oil production.
