The Government Is Ordering Toddlers to Appear in Immigration Court Alone

With thousands of immigrant families still reeling from the fallout of the Trump administration’s short-lived and inhumane family-separation policy, children as young as 3 are being ordered to appear in immigration court alone, the Texas Tribune reports.

Immigration lawyers in Texas, California, and Washington, D.C., told the Tribune that unaccompanied minors have previously been required to appear alone in court, but the family-separation policy has meant that the children are now younger and more numerous than ever before.

Lindsay Toczylowski, the executive director of Immigrant Defenders Law Center in Los Angeles, said she and her team recently represented an unaccompanied 3-year-old in court, “and the child — in the middle of the hearing — started climbing up on the table.”

“It really highlighted the absurdity of what we’re doing with these kids,” she said.

It's a country that runs on anxiety and hostility, hatefulness, shootings. persecution of minorities and on and on. It's a country that can't even get its act together on health care like sane nations, immigration is down the tubes. Now a new SCOTUS will probably argue gay marriage again, on and on. Now, it's run by gangsters. Phew!!!

I was told earlier today in response to something I posted on Facebook that this isn't all "black and white" (quotes in original) and that I was expressing myself too emotionally to really understand or to persuade others that kidnapping and torturing children has unguessed-at nuances and shades of gray.

9. Because 3 year olds are competent to stand trial? A 3 year old intended to break the law?

Only reason to have a 3 year old come into any court without a parent or guardian is if s/he was an orphan in an adoption hearing.
There is nothing a 3 year old can be responsible for, in which s/he has to defend herself or himself.
I have a holy terror of a 2 and a half year old grandchild I'm caring for, and no matter how bad or defiant she may act when she wants something, she still has no idea that there is a world beyond what she can see in front of her. She's not capable of understanding more than the basics of cause and effect; heck, even my 6-year old granddaughter sometimes still has problems with that. Neither are competent to stand trial and answer to a judge why or why not they should be sent somewhere.

This is so sick.
