In light of where this country is now and the direction that it is heading, I can only be depressed. What do we have to be proud? We have an embarrassing clown installed in the Whitehouse, a Congress that has been bought by special interests and is determined to appease the racial and religious bigots. We are no longer an inspiration to the world, rather our oldest friends and allies are fearful of what we might do next in pursuing the MAGA agenda. As a lifelong student of US history, I can only be sad on the 4th of July.

(62,451 posts)I used to love the fourth but now things are so distorted.
I can't stand the thought of right wingers who have handed the country to oligarchs and are taking rights from the other 99% hooting and hollering about freedumb and liberties on the fourth.

If I hadn't procrastinate applying for an 'enhanced' driver's license, I'd probably be spending the day in Canada.

(54,770 posts)if we'd stayed with England. We'd be more like Canada. Not that we wouldn't have problems, but I think we'd be better off.

(9,275 posts)One good thing about the day. His mom used to tell him the fireworks were for him.
We play in a community concert band and play a load of patriotic crap this time of year. We are always featured at our town's All-American July 4 with fireworks and a band concert. I have never felt less patriotic, in fact downright hate this country right now. DH feels the same.

(22,758 posts)the area's fireworks are fired off right across from my house, so I will have to put up with the noise and all the people who park in front of my house... I have no interest in celebrating

(5,542 posts)The last thing I want to do is go to a barbecue and play with fire.
I would be less inclined to celebrate if I was ever inclined at all.

(25,641 posts)But this year I'm taking it back, I'm flipping it. I'm making a list of all the good American things. I'm American through and through even though I haven't been back to the U.S. for a long time. I made a pineapple upside down cake yesterday. I ate a Snickers bar the other day for the first time in decades (too salty). I drank Diet Coke with ice (too salty). There are so many wonderful American things.

(66,467 posts)I spent seven years in the military for this? For draft-dodgers and armchair warriors to take over the country and dismantle everything that made the nation work? That made us a remarkable people?
Bleh. Forget it. I'm done with this sick nation.
If I could just convince Mrs. Aristus to move, I'd be out of here. The UK, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, any place...

(34,138 posts)I'll be alone - my husband is driving to Panama City to be with his siblings for the day. My back can't handle the 2 hour (one way) trip, much less sitting in folding seats, so I will stay home. I'll probably do what I normally do - stream video, needlework, and hang out with the cat.
I will be hoping for rain - the idiot neighbors always try to explode everything they can.
I might splurge and get some a hamburger, grill it on the indoor griddle, and eat them with potato chips. I don't have that kind of meal very often so that will be a treat.

(6,645 posts)with serving in the military a real ^&*(&&*(*!! They have no idea that there are so many vets these days with an aversion to things blowing up and sounding like bombs. In our area they sell the really loud ones that are much stronger than most states and it sounds like a war going on. One year we came home from a picnic and the neighborhood had smoke floating in a layer about 5 feet off the ground. That was BEFORE sundown. That doesn't even consider the dope in the WH.
