Trump sees justification to rev up hardline policies

The president declares ‘profound vindication’ for his controversial immigration moves after Supreme court upholds his travel ban.

By MATTHEW NUSSBAUM 06/26/2018 12:32 PM EDT Updated 06/26/2018 02:49 PM EDT

It was just five days ago that President Donald Trump committed a rare act of buckling to public pressure, signing an executive order to end — at least temporarily — his own administration’s policy of forcibly separating children from parents who illegally crossed the border.

On Tuesday, he declared “profound vindication” on his larger hardline approach to immigration. By a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court delivered a sprawling victory to Trump when it upheld his highly controversial travel ban, the outgrowth of his campaign pledge to ban all Muslims from entering the United States.

Even as Trump faces a storm of controversy for a crackdown on undocumented immigrants and his market-rattling tariffs, the court’s ruling demonstrated Trump’s license to reshape the federal government in his own image even as critics decry the targeting of various minority groups.

It also could further embolden Trump, who has wielded his executive power in the name of national security and has tried to steamroll a Congress that has so far been unable to deliver him a border wall, a full repeal of Obamacare or an infrastructure package.

He sees no reason or consequences to stop.
Except November.
He bluffs himself but he is terrified of the election.

If I recall, this whole shitstorm started with a 90 day moratorium on immigration and travel restrictions to "get to the bottom of what's going on..." RIGHT???

Have I gone insane? That WAS the way this whole thing started, no?

Why the fuck would Trump STILL need to "find out what's going on"?
I hate the man. Hate. I wish I could watch him suffer and prevent other people from aiding or comforting him. I wish his fucking heart would stop pumping blood to his brain long enough to kill off the few remaining brain cells that work and cripple him for a life of total dependence and pain. I hope he dies soon, because the day he does, I am going to have a public party of celebration - complete with Champagne and Caviar.

Fuck you Trump, just fuck you.

Even if we win both Houses, Donnie Two Scoops is now in full dictator mode, and will barge ahead with EOs and regulations and unethical behavior like the proverbial bull in a China shop. Our only hope is the judiciary, and he and Turtle are moving at a breakneck speed to fill all open slots with true believers -- witness the SCOTUS decision on the Muslim travel ban.

I would imagine the Repugs will be pouring a lot of money into preserving their Senate majority. If they lost that and the Dems stuck together, it would put a stop to many of Trump's abhorrent appointments. Holding the House will put the brakes on his most egregious attempts to undo every progressive thing that has been done since FDR, especially Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

But like I said, Trump now sees himself as all-powerful, and with the Repugs totally cowed by him it's going to take 100x more effort to stop him than it would have last year.

Which is why he went hardline on the latino immigrants a few days ago, removing due process of law and proclaiming they should all be deported without hearings.

Trump has taken this hardline, racist position because Kellyanne Conway has probably looked at polling data that indicates it is a winning issue for him with his Republican base, as well as self-identified Independents.

Black men and boys continue to get shot and killed because people in this country are racist.

Bakeries and B&Bs deny service to same-sex couples because people in this country are discriminatory.

A good number of people don't mind that Russia helped Trump steal this election, as long as their side wins.

These are our neighbors and co-workers and family members and friends. And they are members of a cult (of personality).

We're almost there... I see many people realizing that we're not going to persuade these people to vote for Democrats or to "see the light."

They are members of a cult. The only way we defeat this is to defeat their leader (Trump) and overwhelm them at the polls. Until we can get the voting process sorted out and the Voting Rights Act restored, our biggest short-term goal should be mobilizing the biggest, most overwhelming show of Democratic support during election time.
