General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI unfriended my right wing facebook friends this morning. I am tired of seeing their ignorant shit
when I open Facebook.
At this point in my 72 years on earth I feel like we have one last chance of saving what goodness can come of having a representative form of government.
We have to win in November and at least take back the House. If we fail to do that then there is no stopping the dismantling of our government and our institutions as I have known them all my life.
I lost faith in the supreme court in 2000. I am losing faith in everything about the federal government that I grew up trusting in.
If I have one consoling thing it is that I won't be living much in the future we are building for ourselves and I don't want to.
2000 was a powerful shock, 2016 was much worse, I don't think I can take losing this year also.
There are powerful forces against us and I am not sure we have the strength to beat them back.
I turn on the news and day after day pundits tell me how bad it is but no one can tell us what to do about it. It is not enough to sit on a panel and complain about the situation you need to cheer us on to fight against what is wrong.
I am not in a good place today.

It started out as a tedious process until I had an idea. Why not unfriend the whole damn thing? So I just deleted my account and have never looked back. I can call and text and see friends in person if I want. Facebook is full of all sorts of information. Unfortunately so very little of it is even worth knowing. Hopefully people won't sit on their hands this year. We need everyone to get out and vote. A small minority of people put this jack ass in the White house in 2016. I'm ready to kick Trump's ass this year and in 2020 as well. This is our country, it's not theirs in spite of what they think.

(7,768 posts)I'm really choosy about who I accept as a friend. I'm sort of a snob that way but I'm not trying to rack up scores of friends or win any FB popularity contest. I'm more interested in quality than quantity.
I got friend requests from a nephew and a niece, my sister's kids. I checked out their facebook pages and I ignored their requests for a while. After repeated requests from them, I finally accepted.
That lasted about a week and a half. I started seeing their right-wing shit INFESTING my page. I unfriended both of them.
They sent me requests again. I ignored them. Another nephew contacted me and said the kids were thinking it was a mistake and wanted to know what was wrong.
I told him I didn't want their conspiracy, right-wing garbage polluting my Facebook page. I didn't want my other friends to have to even look at their bullshit, I was embarrassed by it and it was NO MISTAKE.
They were shocked. How could i shun FAMILY? Well, I'm more interested in WHO you are as a person than if we're related.
Bye bye. Good riddance.

(32,088 posts)My brother will post that shit, too. I just unfollowed him. "Unfollowing" allows you to still be "friends," while not having their garbage show up in your newsfeed. I can still see the comments he makes on other family members' posts, however.

(23,297 posts)I was friended in 2009 by a guy I knew since junior high school. Hadn't seen him in 35 years. The first post I saw was right wing bullshit. He was blocked that day. Life's too short to look at crazy talk and bullshit rhetoric.

(7,077 posts)... acknowledged our rights to differ, our common interests, encouraged him to be politically active to reverse the economic deterioration of his holdings, etc.
We don't have to come to blows... and if we can create effective relationships with some of them, we can exploit fissures among the rest of them to accomplish something that is decidedly more in the public good than dissolution of our Union.
That said, don't put up with any lying Nazi bullshit.

(11,841 posts)but the media, regardless of who you watch or listen to, will beat a dead horse for 72 straight hours to get their point across.
I feel much better and have noticed that since I've quit the world is STILL here and I'm still enjoying life as best I can!!
ETA- DU has "latest news" and I can read it and be done. But very little TV/radio news shows anymore. I'm just tired of the constant blathering

(54,770 posts)their ignorant white wing racist junk. I get how you feel. It's tough.
I really did not realize how many white wing racists I went to school with 50 years ago until I started seeing some of their crud when Obama was Prez. And a few that I would have expected to be the biggest white wingers are not, that was good to learn.

(4 posts)I keep all my wingnut friends and try to make more. I also listen to right wing radio as often as I can. I actually used to record the O'Reilly Factor.
I'm not sure I have an explanation for this. At least not one that makes a lot of sense. I suppose it has something to do with enjoying the fight. There's something gratifying about knowing just how stupid most of their arguments are, how incredibly racist many are, despite their constant complaints about playing the "race card."
I'm convinced that history will not look kindly on this modern, American conservative movement. And I said that 20 years ago, not realizing that it could possibly get worse.

(20,006 posts)without unfriending them. Apparently they technically remain friends but you no longer have to see their posts. I've done that to a couple of cousins that I wouldn't want to admit are related to me but I don't want to incite hostility by unfriending them.

(12,265 posts)By blocking certain websites they post it helped, for a while, then I started not following, then I just bit the bullet and unfriended them. I don't need the stress of realizing I've been friends with fascists.
