https://www.milkbusiness.com/article/trumps-270-canadian-dairy-tariff-fact-or-fiction

It's more complex than what Trump tweeted (quelle surprise).

Canada has a dairy quota. Imports in their quota system have no tariffs. If it is surplus to the quota then yep, 270% tariffs.

The reason for quotas is supply management. In the USA it is the free market that controls supply and demand, and some farmer subsidies somewhere I'm sure. In the EU it is the free market plus farmer subsidies. In Canada the supply is controlled so the product fetches a good price at market. Farmers make more money, consumers get what they want (not ultra cheap... but they get it) and the government doesn't have to subsidize farmers.

Also from here...

As a recent visitor to Wisconsin, “America’s Dairyland”, where low prices are forcing the closure of hundreds of dairy farms a year, Muirhead said he encountered no resentment against Canada among local farmers. “The president of the Wisconsin Farmers Union told me that what they really wanted was a supply-managed system like ours,” he said.

If the Wisconsin farmers want a supply management system... then why does rural America keep voting Republican?

implement a similiar supply management system . We in the Dairy Industry knew full well what would happen with out it. Massive over production and Fluid Milk prices from hell. Once Washington heard what we were up to,there was a major Propaganda Campaign waged by Carnation Farms,Bordern's and Foremost foods accusing we Dairy Farmers of anti Americanism and wanting to organize a Union.

The NFO(national Farmers Organization ) was formed and within weeks,Richard Nixon was calling us Commies and other choice names. And of Course we had our little issue with a certain Senator named Joe McCarthy. Needless to say,the NFO did succeed for a few years with limited Dairy Members and of course, over production did happen and the rest is history.

added more cows when the price of a 100wtg went up and that made prices drop. Then McDonalds got good deals on burger. If any farmer ever tried to cut production to maintain prices, his neighbor would fill the void the next day.

Dairy Price support measures are in place, nothing changes. That is the real reason for over production. Two years ago two large Dairy operations in Arizona ceased because of Market conditions. Rather than running the cows to Slaughter, those 19k Dairy animals and replacements ended up in the Mid West.

If you Dairy in Wisconsin you are in Zone One for Subsides . Meaning you will get the low end of Price support.

And yes,the Guy down the road will continue to add to his herd thinking the other Guy is the fault. There is so many human relation issues behind this. Talk about a flawed Mind Set.

In Ontario, milk and other groceries are bit higher, but the social safety net is more extensive. Ontario pays a child benefit to each family on a per child basis. It is paid regardless of employment status. It makes sure kids get fed.

The prices aren’t 200 pct of ours on milk. Maybe double or so.

200% 'more', as asked about in the OP ... that would mean triple the price.
