1. Actully the NRA is the least of your worries...

I am more concerned about "The Patriot act II" or something like it. Just think of how the TSA is already out of control, just think if they start operating road blocks. The push to expand Bushco's secret lists even more with people that cannot buy (enter anything that was used in such an attack here). Heaven forbid they use a gasoline bomb, you need to have your papers checked when filling up your car, to make certain your not on the "no buy" lists.

Knee Jerk political reactions tend to be regretted by all.

3. People on the Left assume these draconian laws are directed at them....

Perhaps some leadership types, but not the Left. As Chris Hedges points out again and again, the Left are now ineffectual types who, when greatly provoked, write scathing Letters to the Editor. Fringe elements of the Left might chain themselves to some corporation's front door.

It's the heavly armed Right that what you describe will attempt to stop. And no one fans those flames more than the NRA:

In short, Obama never met a gun he liked, and never met a gun ban he didn’t like. The same was true of his running mate, then U.S. Senator Joe Biden, D-Del.
