Trump has whittled his party down to its festering core.

(10,721 posts)What I'm finding is pretty dated. Has there been a substantial decline in, say, the last few months? And has there been an increase in Democratic affiliation?
Most independents are very partisan, so an increase in independents isn't real comforting. Most simply like calling themselves independent when they aren't.
Edit: I found this: https://news.gallup.com/poll/15370/party-affiliation.aspx
That doesn't reflect a recent decline, yet Trump's overall rating has gone up.

(4,742 posts)Large third party pollsters don't change their survey methodology (not algorithms) based on trying to match an election outcome. That, in itself, is a tin foil hattery. I've worked with many survey and polling companies.

(10,721 posts)I've seen no evidence for this claim that people are leaving the Republican Party in droves.

(6,377 posts)So the only people who are left are the diehard Trump supporters, so of course his approval rating among them is going to be high.
His approval ratings among independents would be more telling.

(65,191 posts)90% of 30%. Now add 30% of 40% independents and PINO gets to 39 or 40%m which has been the hover point for 18 months.

If Trump does something good (to them) it's VICTORY! but still they are victims. If he fails miserably... it's the same.

(4,742 posts)The jobless rate is low, wages are stable (not going up), the stock market is ok, price of gas is remaining overall low.
You start seeing some ticking up in the unemployment rate, a couple thousand point stock market decline, prices of gas going up over a dollar or so, etc. You will start to see some more people pealing off.

(18,672 posts)Not many people will own up to being Republicans. They usually say theyre Independents, even though they vote for the Republican every time. Off to check on that.

(18,672 posts)Up from 35% according to Gallup. I guess some Independents approve of kiddie internment camps. Not surprised.

(56,829 posts)In the early months of his presidency, it was hovering around 80%.
However, since Trump is great at self-promotion and Republicans get their news from Fox and Rush, it's been going up over that time. Also, because of things like repealing & replacing Obama executive orders with Trumpian ones and the unprecedented pace of federal judges being appointed it's going up as well.

(14,565 posts)There is nothing more pathetic than a Happy Adjuster, the people who make anything whatever they want it to be.
Lately the hysterical desperation is to pretend that the Republican base is free falling all the time. Some of the posts want to pretend it is down to next to nothing. I'm sure we'll see more of that theme next week and subsequent weeks because there is more this week than last week.
Meanwhile, if you get out of the cocoon and actually sample sites where conservatives and independents post, or if you actually know and converse with Republicans, it could not be more obvious on a daily basis that Donald Trump is indeed more popular with Republicans than he was at this time last year.
As always, the easiest way to define the ignorant Happy Adjusters is to look at the equation in reverse. Let's say Trump's approval rating among Republicans had done exactly the opposite, moving from 80% to 70% instead of 80% to 90%. Do you think there would be one peep regarding a lower number of Republicans within the sample? Ha. Not a chance. Instead there would be Happy Adjuster threads asserting that even Republicans have finally wised up, and fairly soon that 70% will be down to 60%. And so forth.
The Happy Adjusters were convinced Trump would already be out of office by now.

(56,829 posts)that Trump is great at self-promotion and controlling the media narrative. In 2016, Hillary had one great opening speech after she had essentially wrapped up the nomination that nailed Trump and got good coverage, and then hardly got any media coverage at all until the DNC - it was all Trump (positive & negative) for the next 3 months or Hillary/DNC emails (which was entirely negative)
Then, we had the DNC and RNC and the debates. Clinton got good coverage from the debates, but all the other news was Clinton/DNC emails again - Trump was controlling the news cycle even with his "grab em by the pussy" tape.
he's going to control the narrative again this summer and fall leading up to the elections. Democrats need to GOTV and stay united in the face of Trump and more Russian interference
