And yes, no one would have dared use the phrase 'Red Wave' when I was a kid--back in the day--without being condemned a Commie. My dad and my father-in-law, both dead now, were WWII vets. My father was a solid Republican, small business man, hated taxes and groused about politicians in general.

But he also sobbed when JFK was assassinated, grieved along with the entire country. It was the first time I saw my father cry.

It didn't matter that Kennedy was a Dem or that my father had complained about his policies, much to my mother's chagrin. My father knew what that murder meant for JFK's family, his friends but even more so, for the country.

It was a different time, a different world. As a kid, it bewildered me. But those reactions, those sobbing, grieving, frightened adults stayed with me.
