Six months after passing a tax bill that is projected to blow a $1.9 trillion hole in the deficit, Republicans on the House Budget Committee are scrambling to regain fiscal credibility with their 2019 spending plan.
The plan would cut over $8 trillion in spending over the course of a decade, according to estimates from the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, including $5.4 trillion in mandatory spending.
When youre asked what keeps you up at night, there is nothing that weighs more heavily on me than our fiscal situation, committee member Rep. Jodey Arrington (R-Texas) said this week.
Committee Chairman Steve Womack called the nations debt the largest looming shadow of doubt on Americas future. The federal government is spending far more than it takes in, largely due to the unchecked growth of mandatory, or autopilot, spending, he said.
Republicans, who have traditionally defined themselves as the party of fiscal responsibility, have been playing defense on the issue. Theyve faced accusations from Democrats that theyve mortgaged Americas future for the sake of the tax cut.

(3,344 posts)This is the kind of horrendously shitty news article that has caused problems for decades. No matter what Republicans do, they are still portrayed as caring about the debt. They don't care about the debt. They just use it to try to kill the social safety net. And they create massive debt in order to use the excuse.
Yet the press still goes on pretending that Republicans care.

(6,916 posts)When you judge a news source, the owner of the source is critical.
Here, The Hills owner is a Trumpite Republican who wants to propagandize for tax cuts.
Thats why this article was written.
This headline is a travesty of propaganda and it does not belong on DU without more explanation of The Hills bias.

(6,916 posts)This is an enormously bullshit article from the Hill.
First, the Hill is owned by a Trumpite Republican billionaire.
Billionaires control the GOP, and their strategy on tax cuts for themselves is:
1. Cut taxes, ignoring the deficit
2. Lie about cutting services, claiming we have to reduce the deficit.
This article is EXACTLY the number 2 argument. It lies about the deficit so the Hills GOP billionaire owner can destroy the government to cut taxes on the rich.
Bullshit article, bullshit headline, and bullshit publication.
None of us should read The Hill.

(32,694 posts)Need to cut $12.7 trillion over the next 10 years. Tax cuts cost $12 trillion over next 10 years.
Can we get some film of republican claiming the tax cuts will pay for themselves and actually raise revenue, like Mana from heaven.

(11,885 posts)Their tax bill was all along a scam to pay off their wealthy donors who bribed them by giving money for their campaigns, and the tax bill was another scam . It was designed to transfer even more wealth to them , from robbing all programs including all health care and Social Security to pay them off for backing them and installing them into office with their deep pockets. All when it was being voted on they told the American people lie after lie to sell it, then again , like W did, it was to enrich themselves and their donors with.

I had to hammer my grandfather on this, hard, last time we spoke. He didn't like the idea so much once he realized it would impact him personally.
