Last-minute candidate dropout means Republican-held Palm Beach County Commission may flip

Christina Morrison, who held a kickoff party Wednesday evening for her candidacy for Palm Beach County Commission, decided not to run after all — a surprise move that greatly increases the chances that the Democrats will pick up the seat now held by Republican Commissioner Steven Abrams.

The Democratic candidate is Robert Weinroth, a former member of the Boca Raton City Council. He’s been running since January and has raised a significant campaign war chest: $115,600 in cash and contributions of good and services, according to campaign finance reports.

The remaining Republican candidate is William “Billy” Vale, a pharmaceutical sales representative with no political experience. A candidate since March, Vale had raised $6,022 as of May 31.

The district, which is anchored in Boca Raton, takes in the southeast part of the county and coastal communities. Current voter registration figures show the territory is 35 percent Democratic, 34 percent Republican and 31 percent no party affiliation/independent or third party voters.

“I dropped my candidacy,” she said in a telephone interview. “I didn’t see a clear trajectory to winning. I’m not going to waste my money, my time and my friends’ money if I can’t see the trajectory to win. It’s just a numbers game.”

Morrison said some of her potential donors were already supporting Weinroth. “He has a big financial advantage,” she said, but said that doesn’t mean she’s predicting that Weinroth is certain to win.

A great deal happens at the local government level -- which is exactly why Democrats are running for several hundred local seats around the nation.

But you misunderstood what's happening here: It's the Repub candidate who pulled out (abdicated if you will) because she believed she was losing to our Boca Raton Democratic candidate.

During the 2011 election in Montgomery County, PA, the 3rd largest county (population-wise) in PA, Democrats were finally able to take majority contol of the 3-member County Commisioners office, turning what had moved from a red county to a purple county, into a near blue county, and was a first in at least a century. This office of Commissioners is the same one that Tweety's brother used to be a GOP member of.

Democrats are slowly clawing back seats AND taking new seats at these local levels.

And no I did not "misunderstand". I read the OP article and right there in the OP first paragraph it says -

a surprise move that greatly increases the chances that the Democrats will pick up the seat now held by Republican Commissioner Steven Abrams.

Meaning what happened strengthens the chance for a D pickup of a seat currently held by a Republican.
