Masquerading as truth.

Probably never said by Marie Antoinette. Similar kinds of quotes preceded her by a century. And that quote itself preceded Marie by a couple of decades.

The most novel view I've heard was the RW claim that Antoinette pushed for a law that said that if the bakers didn't produce enough basic bread for the poor that they should be forced through price-controls to offer the higher-end varieties of bread for the same price, so that if the baker ran out of coarse bread, well, let the peasants eat cake. It's every bit as accurate as the Jacobin/leftist view.

Both claims are almost certainly false. Even though the French royalty did engage in reactionary and repressive price controls a la russe sovietique that hurt the small business owner of the time in order to make the populace less unruly.

If indeed she said anything close to this at all.

The story stuck because it captured the image of royalty who were so out of touch with the struggles of ordinary people that they could even think of cake in the context of people not having enough bread.

Or that she could cure hunger by decree.

Or something like that.

Anyway, there are many parallels. Donnie and marielania live like royalty and are clueless about how ordinary people live and they think they can solve world problems be decree.

And Melania wears a jacket announcing that she doesn't care when visiting toddlers in cages....
