Near the end of the film Dr. Strangelove the Russian ambassador reveals the the existence of Russia's Doomsday device.
From Wikipedia:After a heated discussion in Russian with the Premier, the ambassador informs President Muffley that the Soviet Union has created a doomsday device, which consists of many buried bombs jacketed with "Cobalt-Thorium G" connected to a computer network set to detonate them automatically should any nuclear attack strike the country. Within two months after detonation, the Cobalt-Thorium G would encircle the earth in a radioactive "doomsday shroud", wiping out all human and animal life, rendering the surface of the Earth uninhabitable for 93 years. The device cannot be dismantled or "untriggered", as it is programmed to explode if any such attempt is made. When the President's wheelchair-bound scientific advisor, former Nazi Dr. Strangelove, points out that such a doomsday device would only be an effective deterrent if everyone knew about it, de Sadeski replies that the Russian Premier had planned to reveal its existence to the world the following week.
This Trump Launched Zero Tolerance Policy was said to be a deterrent to keep immigrants and refugees from seeking refuge in the U.S.
But they kept it quiet and have been separating families for months. It's big news now but they have been very busy the last 2 months.
The question is how can it be a deterrent if they never intended to tell anybody?

How the hell can a refugee caravan know about that?
This wasn't a deterrent.
This was Stephen Miller's wet dream come to life. (ew)

(52,318 posts)we keep falling in the trap of thinking about facts and specific policy outcomes and all that stuff that matters when you're talking about good governance. yeah, it's a lousy deterrent if you don't tell people about it.
but *all* their policies are lousy when looked at in the specific. the wall is an idiotic idea, for instance.
but what these stupid individual policies do effectively is *change the social order*. this is the world the trumpies live in. they want a rigid hierarchy with english-speaking white male americans at the top, blacks and women and spanish-speaking immigrants at the bottom. no equal rights, no equal respect, etc.
what separating families does is tell spanish-speaking foreigners "don't even bother coming here, we will find some crazy way to f*ck you up." it's *not* meant to be a clear policy like "when coming here, make sure you come at a designated port of entry with valid paperwork" because they want to deter *all* immigration (at least from mexico and points south).
the harder it is to understand, the better, because for trumpies, the whole message is for the u.s. government to be mean to immigrants from spanish-speaking countries.
