Kansas secretary of state defies court order, won't register eligible voters

Two days after a federal judge overturned his documentary proof-of-citizenship law and ordered him to register eligible voters, Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach is openly defying the court’s order.

According to the Topeka Capital Journal, Kobach’s elections director instructed county clerks to continue demanding proof-of-citizenship from anyone registering to vote until they receive written instruction otherwise. A spokeswoman for Kobach said his office is still reviewing the 118-page ruling, which clearly finds the law unconstitutional and orders Kobach to attend six hours of legal classes for violating rules of civil procedure.

Danedri Herbert, the spokesperson for Kobach, said the judge was not clear when she instructed the secretary of state to accept voter registration applications without a document like a passport or birth certificate.

“I think ‘immediately’ is kind of open to interpretation,” Herbert said.

This amuses me http://www.kansas.com/news/politics-government/article213444484.html

On Monday, a federal judge struck down the state's proof of citizenship voter registration law in a ruling that excoriated Kobach’s conduct in court and ordered him to take additional legal classes. Kobach quickly promised to appeal; his office said the judge had reached an “extreme conclusion.”

He said he believes Judge Julie Robinson’s requirement of additional education is not necessary, though he will comply with it.

“I’m not familiar with any other judge doing such a thing,” Kobach said.

I am but a humble 3L Gothmog, but I bet neither you or I would defy a court ruling.

back when he was first running for office, it came out that he himself hadn't been registered nor had he voted for a period of years immediately before.

I also am thinking he may have let his law license (or whatever exactly that is) elapse.

I was living in Kansas back then and it's been long enough ago that my memory of specifics isn't completely clear. I did try a quick google search and didn't find anything, just recent articles on this stuff.

holy context twisting batman!
is there some alternate interpretation besides "as soon as fucking possible"?
if my boss asked me to do something "immediately", and i sat around trying to open a debate on how to interpret "immediately" i would be out on my ass in a few weeks, no question about it.
