It was not that long ago that I was discounted as exaggerating the situation for my convictions that we were being taken over by fascists who are intent on establishing an Authoritarian Presidency. A government no different than what has emerged in Russia and China and is making a resurgence in Western Europe. The first major step was the Republicans attempt to establish the doctrine of the Unitary Executive presidency. This doctrine totally demolishes the concept of the three independent branches of government. This goal has been taken up with renewed determination by this administration. Trump and his cadre of henchmen are attacking the legality of every agency of the government that questions their actions. We have entered into a dangerous situation that would nullify the concept that everyone, regardless of their position, is subject to the law. Trump is basically claiming that he is the law and his authority is so unquestionable that he can actually pardon himself. There is little doubt that he flaunting this sacred principle protects the unjustly prosecuted with his unveiled tacit promise of pardons to those who support this assault on the constitution.

Bush was right in saying the Constitution is only a damn piece of paper. That is all it is when the principles that it contains are not upheld by the rule of law and the demands of the citizens. Unfortunately, we are well down this road to oblivion when a third to the nation is so polarized that they are willing to provide unquestioned allegiance to those who determined to destroy the foundation of the Union. E pluribus Unum, one nation undivided has dissolved into naked tribalism. The Republicans are guilty of creating a monstrosity that could consume all of us.
