Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWhere are our liberal Hollywood elite on the child separation outrage?
Are they organizing to express their outrage and condemnation of this hideous situation? Where are Tom Hanks, George Clooney, Jane Fonda, Meryl Streep, and the rest of the high profile stars?
I'm actually quite certain they will be, if not organized, quite forceful in their condemnation at some point. While the right will write them off, I'm sure they can do some good in standing with so many high profile figures to condemn this atrocity.
But, you go Hollywood!

(63,912 posts)...her and her "revolution." F*ck. I used to love Thelma and Louise. She's totally ruined that movie for me. Seeing her now just gets my blood pressure up.
So sick of her...don't even want to know what she's thinking about this crisis! As far as I'm concerned the only thing she can do to help is to donate money to lawyers to help these mothers and fathers fight to get their children to get back!

(58,785 posts)Btw, "Hollywood elite" is a hostile right-wing term.
CTyankee
(63,912 posts)Or, "progressive Hollywood voices." Is that better?
What about the ones who live in London, NY and rural Colorado? "Influential voices from the entertainment world" sounds like something out of a magazine...
But whatever. "Hollywood" and "elite" have both been right wing dog-whistle smears for years. As are "Democrat elites" and "liberal elites." In fact, hostiles across the spectrum use "elites" as a smear to throw at anyone who doesn't think burning down the national barn is the answer.
AN ACADEMIC, a politician, a journalist, a film star, a nobleman and a banker walk into a bar. They order different drinks, and sit at separate tables each doing their own thing. There is no punch line; these people do not belong together in any sensible way. Yet members of these groups and others are regularly given the same label: elites.

(63,912 posts)I never thought I'd everr hear from Laura Bush again and yet she felt compelled to speak up.
As for "elites" I think you are right. I do like the construct of "progressive voices" as I feel that is where we meet all right thinking people on the political spectrum (and I mean right as in people who share progressive values.

(24,324 posts)I am sorry about so many jumping on you for using the term that shall not be mentioned.
I believe I understand why you may have used it. Perhaps with a certain .....'innocence?'
Whatever, after enjoying SO SO MANY of your art history posts, I think you deserve the right to perhaps use..... umm.... a term that is not seen in a positive light.. as I do not think you meant it that way...
Or maybe you did..
Anyway, I believe you understand my meaning, as poorly ewxpressed as it is.
Will others?
Thing is, something has changed here over the last.....few years..... ?
There is a bit of... um.. short-temperedness.. A waiting to pounce, loss of subtly, loss of seeing something other than black or white,(maybe I should say red or green),
But there is still often brilliance, super research and insightful thought.
Ah,, it is still a great place ....
CTyankee
(63,912 posts)I think I was a bit sloppy in picking that "liberal elites" usage. I, too, wish that we could be a little less jumping on our own without looking further into the meaning of what the OP is trying to express.
We're all upset and for the same reason. We lost so much in Nov. of 2016. Not only did Obama have to leave, we lost the dream of having a wonderful woman as President. It's bound to make us really sad and angry.

(6,402 posts)Which is where a lot of the rallying gets done. A lot of celeb interview orgs won't touch this kind of stuff so it doesn't come up or gets cut when packaged.
But hey, here's a whole bunch of them speaking out about it BACK ON MAY 26th
https://www.thewrap.com/separation-of-children-from-parents-at-border-hollywood-protests/
I'm sure they'll get around to speaking out about it, as you said.
And not speaking to you directly, CTYankee, but I love it when people demand people speak out without looking to see if they have. We hear that a lot with "why aren't democrats speaking out!" but when you go and look at the various reps and senators, they are. They're just not getting the oxygen in the room for it as everything is about Trump or something else.

(63,912 posts)And just BTW, my very liberal senators and my congresswoman have reached out and I always sign on to the statements to add my support. My days of marching in the streets carrying a sign are over, due to my advanced age and my worsening arthritic back.

(29,676 posts)And our Fourth Congressional has a nice primary run. Personally, I like both Hallie Thompson and Renee Hoagensen but I prefer Renee win the primary. I think Hallie is still young and inexperienced and I hope she runs for smaller state seats. She'd be a welcome addition to an ag committee or anything science related.
Renee does not have political experience but she's a very strong business woman who has polished her approach this year and is ready to take on Hartzler. (Joe Biden has also promised to come to Missouri to campaign for her. Squee!)
If Greitens gets his signatures to run as an independent for Senate Claire McCaskill is safe.
And everyone needs to keep an eye on Hillary Shields. She is running for a state seat but I've met her and she is the real deal. She and Jason Kander are the future of the Missouri Democratic Party. I can see both becoming national players.
Sorry for the rambling but November is going to be exciting.

Mark Ruffalo and I are from the same hometown, though neither of us have lived there in decades. Cusack is from nearby. Takei, Winkler and Reiner have always been liberal, Reiner always outspoken. Midler has also always been outspoken and supportive of the underdog.
As a sci fi fan Perlman and Hamill have been fun to follow. It's nice to see that they are outspoken when a number of fans are supportive of the current administration.

(63,912 posts)These people are citizens with first amendment rights, just as we are. Only when they do it they do it to a great deal of media attention. And that gets results eventually.
I am old and have lived through lots of 1960s protests, sit ins, even public beatings (who can forget John Lewis' suffering a horrible beating?), and I have seen progress on civil rights, on ending the Vietnam War, on the rising of the Women's Marches?
My kids and grandkids are marching these days. They are paying attention...
