London Breed declared victor in San Francisco mayoral election

Board of Supervisors President London Breed was assured Wednesday of winning the San Francisco mayoral election when the last candidate who had a chance of catching her, former state Sen. Mark Leno, conceded the race.

“I called Supervisor London Breed this morning to congratulate her on her victory and to wish her every success — personally and professionally — in her new job as mayor of San Francisco,” Leno said in a news conference at a sign shop he runs near City Hall.

“She is a remarkable young woman and she is going to do a very fine job and we wish her all the best, because her success is San Francisco’s success,” Leno said.

Leno called the conversation a positive one. Earlier Wednesday, as reports circulated that Leno planned to concede, a spokeswoman for Breed’s campaign declined to comment. Breed scheduled a news conference for 3 p.m. on the steps of City Hall.

Leno held a slim lead in the ranked-choice balloting after election night last week, but Breed soon pulled ahead and has steadily widened the gap. On Tuesday, she had a 1,861-vote advantage over Leno with about 9,360 votes still to be counted, according to the city Department of Elections.

She will be the first African-American woman elected to lead San Francisco. Breed, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors president, will serve until 2020, finishing the term of late Mayor Ed Lee, who died in December at the age of 65.
