GOP pols slam Rosenstein, say staff 'shaking' in fear over 'threats'

GOP lawmakers accused the Justice Department of "intimidation" on the heels of a Fox News report that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein once threatened to "subpoena" House committee members, with one lawmaker now claiming staffers have been left “physically shaking” over Rosenstein's tactics.

Fox News’ Catherine Herridge reported Tuesday on emails that described a tense closed-door meeting in January. Written by commitee staffers, they said Rosenstein threatened to subpoena emails, phone records and other documents from lawmakers and aides on the House Intelligence Committee -- in response to inquiries regarding the Russia probe.

One staffer said Rosenstein launched a “sustained personal attack against a congressional staffer in retaliation for vigorous oversight” and called the threats “downright chilling.”

The DOJ and FBI have disputed the characterizations of the meetings, with a DOJ official telling Fox News that officials in the room described the characterization of events as false.

IF Rosenstein made threats (and that is a big IF), I wish he would make good on them. But this sounds like more of the same denouncing the DOJ as acting outside their purview and bullying. The Rump said it. Now they all say it. Just more ammunition in the Rump's plan to dismantle the final checks against his dictatorship.

Since the January closed-door meeting, Nunes' staffers have been blabbing to Fox and anyone else who will listen about what went on in that meeting. When DOJ and FBI disputed those accounts, Nunes and his band of elves pushed back harder until Rosenstein finally told them to knock it the hell off. Like a yapping puppy that's annoyed the cat just a little too much, Nunes' staffer go crying back to their friends at Fox, whining about the mean old Deputy AG.

Only Fox would lend a sympathetic ear to such craven mewling.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein will ask the House to probe it's committee staff, according to a report from CNN.

A Justice Department official told CNN that Rosenstein plans to "request that the House general counsel conduct an internal investigation of these congressional staffers' conduct" this week.

The development comes as Fox News reported on Tuesday that Rosenstein threatened to subpoena emails, phone records and other documents from lawmakers and staff on the House Intelligence Committee.
