Ben Cardin: 'Difficult to understand' Trump's treatment of allies

Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) on Monday said that it's "difficult to understand" President Trump's treatment of America's allies.

"The manner in which he has treated our closest allies is really difficult to understand," Cardin said on CNN's "New Day."

"These are democratic countries that share our values and yet the president seems to want to go alone when it comes to working with our closest allies."

The remarks come after Trump over the weekend said he would not sign a communique with the members of the Group of Seven (G-7).

Cardin, who sits on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said Trump is the "outsider" in the G-7, a coalition that includes the United States, France, Japan, Italy, Canada, Germany and the United Kingdom.

"Diplomacy means bringing people together," Cardin told CNN.

"But we start from strength and that is working with our closest allies. We don't pull them apart. And President Trump, throughout his presidency, he started with criticizing our closest allies when he became president," he added.

Putin is already staking his claim to North Korean peninsula.

read this article:

snip of article:

Russia is determined to remind the world that, despite its negligible involvement in the diplomatic preparations for the Trump-Kim summit in Singapore, it remains a key strategic actor on the Korean peninsula.

Keep saying it, though. Trump's recent antics have actually drawn some negative attention for a change, and significant numbers of people might just be willing to reassess their judgment of the Trump administration. It's good to lay the foundation for calling into question Trump's stability and trustworthiness.

But . . .

Be willing in the months to come to ramp up the rhetoric. "Difficult to understand" is marginally all right in June. You'd best have some stronger language to employ come August and September.

He's got a deserved poor self-image, struggled to be accepted in NY, has to try to build himself up by tearing others down, and the consequences be damned.

I have several Canadian friends, they have all expressed their concern and horror at Trump before this last week. Now they just don't know what to think, my response has been something to the effect of: "It's way worse than you think, fascism is spreading like wild fire in America and it's past the point that other countries should just be concerned, other countries should be taking actions and forming alliances to protect themselves from the American aggression that is coming." It's just a matter of time before Trump bombs an ally.

It is not difficult to understand.

It is not trump being trump.

Read Paul Krugman. Read David Leonhardt.

And call it like it is.

Donald Trump is destroying western democracy and the world order that has evolved with reliable allies for more than 75 years.

Donald Trump is attempting to destroy the NATO alliance.

Donald Trump destroying invaluable political, economic, and moral alliance with valued allies.

Donald Trump is actively courting brutal dictators and attempting to form alliances with them.

It's not difficult to understand. It's not puzzling. It's what he is doing. And by doing nothing, Congress is acquiescing in all of these actions.

This brings to mind TV police procedurals, where one of the junior detectives can't grasp the motives behind a crime that they know a particular person committed. The senior detective observes that while the motive may or may not ever come to light, the fact remains that the evidence is overwhelming to commit a particular person.

We can speculate until we're blue in the face about why Trump is doing what he's doing. We conclude that he is racist and white supremacist from way back. We assume that it's all about money. We wonder about his mental health. We're wondering why his so-called advisors don't temper things a bit (they won't because they are sycophants and fellow travelers). In any case, it doesn't fucking matter. What matters are his actions, and those actions are very, very clear.

So, if any of you is still wondering how the German people allowed the rise of Hitler in the 1920s and 1930s, wonder no more. We are witnessing a variation of those developments right now and right here in the US.
