All the meetings were arranged quietly, without even some close advisers to the people involved being told of the conversations, in part because of how much Obama bristles at his private meetings becoming public knowledge. All have been confirmed to POLITICO by multiple people who have been briefed on the secretive sit-downs.

Well, well!

(1,733 posts)Many of the conversations have circled around Obama holding forth about how much Democrats should be heading into the midterms talking about the investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election versus focusing on kitchen table issues. Dont chase the shiny objects, he tells them. Dont hyperventilate over the flash of any tweet. Think about whats going to stick in the long term.

(6,377 posts)From factory towns in Michigan and Pennsylvania who need jobs. An opioid crisis in a county in Ohio. A city in Wisconsin that could lose it's unions. Or a district in Missouri with residents scared they're going to lose their health care. Cater to them. They don't care about the Russian collusion, they're worried about how they're going to make it to next week or month. That's where we'll win.
Wounded Bear
(58,670 posts)The Russian investigations are important, but not high on everybody's radar.
Dem candidates should run on issues that pertain to their districts, with only peripheral reference to the Mueller investigations. If asked, the response should be "Let the Special Counsel finish."

(1,733 posts)The room is filled with union members who all voted for Trump. In years past, they were Bill Clinton supporters, many drifted away under Obama, and there was open contempt for Hillary. I can tell you its because they feel the democratic party walked away from them.
Trump comes along and shows concern for their jobs and lifestyle and locks up their votes. They love the guy and seem to connect with him.
Figure out how to speak to this group, and they will return to their demcratic roots.

(27,815 posts)If they vote for Trump after he hasn't created one new job for them, well, I think that tells you why they really didn't vote for Hillary.

(1,733 posts)I work with these folks every day in a unionized environment with a few hundred coworkers. Traditionally you could count the number of Republicans on one hand. But that was in the Bill Clinton era. Today I estimate my coworkers are 85%+ Trump voters. Why?
Its mainly because folks see Trump as someone "getting things done" and not someone who is "coming to take their guns away" or dosent "look down on those of us with a rural lifestyle" and "does not make fun of our religion" Plus he is "protecting our jobs" and "wants to keep out the bad guys" The quotes are actual statments I heard during the election and still hear today.
Hillary did nothing to get their attention. Nothing to address the issues discussed above. I recall laughter at hearing about "retraining" Since the election, our facility is up to maximum production with all shifts staffed. All of the laid off are now back at work and overtime is plentiful. There is even a bounty being paid to current employees for recommending friends who get hired.
Who do you think gets the credit? Its not Obama, its not Hillary.
I am not a Trump supporter. I think he is a buffoon. But I beleive what my two eyes see, and honestly believe the party has lost touch with this portion of its base. We need a plan to get them to remove their MAGA hats......yes some proudly wear them. One shop steward who helped in the first Obama election actually wears one today.

(14,578 posts)Too many, even here, conflate ALL white rural workers with the nazis.
But it's kitchen table issues.
What if I get laid off? How will I keep my healthcare? Why is college so expensive? Why do they want to privatize Social Security? Why is service at the VA so shitty?
Pretty much everyone in the world wants a good job. If you're talking about good jobs with good benefits, including healthcare that isn't of the 'shitty, rationed with financially crippling copay variety,' then they are listening.
LisaM
(27,815 posts)And choosing to believe them. I like rural people. I grew up with factory workers. But they didn't used to vote against their self interest. They didn't have the drumbeat of right-wing media bleating at them 24 hours a day. And Trump isn't going to create jobs or better times for them, so none of it makes sense. Geeze, Hillary spent time in Alaska cleaning fish guts at a cannery. She told that story during the campaign. But Trump put on a baseball cap and the media lapped it up and never talked about the jobs she had while she was becoming a self-made person. She has a lot more in common with those voters than Trump does and the glee they get from hating her is sometimes more than I can bear. They want to hate her so they do hate her. It's depressing.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)the Obama years. Hard times makes people more conservative. The GOP leadership and their donors know that, so they did their best to maintain hard times for workers through Obama's presidency.
We know McConnell failed in his commitment to keep Obama from accomplishing anything as president. But, as keepers of the national purse, they were able to keep economic stimulation low, barely enough right after late 2007's crash to keep it from crashing again, and they always refused congressional measures that would have assisted the economy's own recovery to the point of raising wages again.
Until now. Now that Obama's out and they're in. Only, of course, being them they're applying stimulus all wrong--as mainly transfers of national wealth to the very wealthy, who are investing very little in new production and new jobs, much less jobs training. This trickle-down stimulus is resulting in more jobs now but will inevitably lead to yet another low-production investor bubble if we don't get control and change course.
I'm afraid Kilgore's eyes are deceiving him. After 8 years of steady economic recovery under Obama, we've taken a right turn and are heading for bad trouble again.

(468 posts)Because as much as they pretend they're not racist, that's what's driving this. Here's a handy cheat-sheet translator:
"getting things done" => "is white"
"coming to take their guns away" => Reagan was in favor of gun control and took more guns away than Obama did.
"does not make fun of our religion" => "is white, which is why I feel comfortable lying about his opposition"
"protecting our jobs" => "is white, who therefore makes me think he gives a shit about our jobs"
"wants to keep out the bad guys" => "but not domestic terrorists, who are mostly all white"
I talk to people like this too, and once you get past the surface, it becomes clear that all these other pretenses just hide deep seated racial and sexual bigotry. There really is no reaching someone who has decided to be evil. The best you can do is not accept their excuses, and explain to them in detail how they themselves will suffer for their evil.
Kilgore
(1,733 posts)I find that cold and heartless.
Steven Maurer
(468 posts)Just that we'll have to wait for them to die for the country to change.
You may like your co-workers, but they sound outright evil. And evil almost never changes. Certainly not by appeasement.
Kilgore
(1,733 posts)During the Bill Clinton administration , and all the prior years they supported democrats, they were not evil. When they worked for the first Obama election they were also not evil. But by the 2016 election after multiple rounds of layoffs and downsizing, they decide to vote for Trump they are transformed into evil. Thats nuts.
BS or not, Trumps rhetoric fired them up. Thats a fact I saw with my two own eyes. Nothing the democratic party offered connected with them.
Their present enthusiasm for Trump is reinforced with production at maximum capacity, plentiful overtime, and everyone who had been laid off is now back to work. Are they now evil? Also see post #57 above.
Yes Trump is a con man and a BS artist but there are reasons he connects with these folks. The democratic party has connected with them in the past (when they were not evil) and can do it again. But never will if attitudes like "lets wait till they die" prevai in the party.
.
Steven Maurer
(468 posts)Plenty of evil people support good candidates when they see their own personal benefit in it or feel they have no other choice (and those candidates also don't press too hard on the parts where they are most evil). Democrats used to be a party that directly appealed to working class white racists. In fact, in the 1950s, the unions were racist too (all but the Wooblies).
Nor is it debatable that racism and sexism drove the 2016 election, not concerns about economic anxiety.
So while I understand that you can sympathize with your friend who got all this enthusiasm for Trump, maybe you ought to ask yourself exactly why he had none when President Obama and the Democrats turned the country around in 2008 from what was looking to turn into a second Great Depression.
For nearly my entirely life, this nation has been in a cycle of; 1) GOP is elected on racism, 2) GOP ruins the economy, 3) White working class racists hold their nose and vote for a Democrat to fix the economy so they can get a job, 4) The economy gets better so they feel safe in voting for racists again. The only way to break this cycle is for either Democrats to start nakedly appealing to evil old racists and sexists, or for us to take the long view.
Even if holding fast to our principles wasn't the right thing to do morally, it certainly is the right thing to do politically. The US is turning into California. And people have long memories about how they were treated. Minorities who become majorities are no exception.
Kilgore
(1,733 posts)They did work to get Obama elected, many twice.
Steven Maurer
(468 posts)I note that they do not credit him with the economic recovery that he, and he alone, was responsible for.
Again, most people who are racially biased won't shoot off their own foot. It take deep hatred indeed to refuse a lifesaver being thrown by a black man. But if they're crediting Trump with Obama's economy, when Trump is starting a trade war, that's all I need to know about them.

(3,425 posts)I will never understand how any sane person can go from being a supporter of Bill Clinton to trusting their future with Trump. I was and still am a supporter of Sanders but when he lost the primary I immediately supported Hillary, a person whom I have always liked and trusted. It was not even a close call.
Those who bought the crap that trump was selling are now getting what they deserve, unfortunately they are also hurting those who knew better than to believe the lying sack of shit they voted in. I would have no idea how to speak their language.

(1,733 posts)By the end of the second Obama term the mill had laid off over half of the workforce and there was talk of a shutdown. This has a way of focusing ones attention on survival. Hillary did not make a case that these workers believed and that coupled with the fear, real or not, that their rural lifestyle was under attack pushed then to Trump. Now with the mill at full production and everyone back to work, he gets all of the credit.
I will keep pounding tne drum that these were once reliable democratic voters and can be again with the right candidate, message and actions.
Hope that helps.

(2,312 posts)I, too, am confused. Unfortunately, Politico and other news organizations are laying off copy editors who value precision in language, usage and sentence structure.
Here's the confusing paragraph:

A phrase such as "instead of" could have clarified it.
Many of the conversations have circled around Obama holding forth about how much Democrats should be heading into the midterms talking about kitchen table issues INSTEAD OF the investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Dont chase the shiny objects, he tells them. Dont hyperventilate over the flash of any tweet. Think about whats going to stick in the long term.

It's not a story about bernie.
Nothing Bernie sanders has ever done, will ever do or talk of doing, Will ever put him Above or Before the dedicated works of President Obama.
This is President Obama's honorable work, & that of the many who came & stayed loyal with him including VP Biden, Eric Holder, and the many many in the trenches of his grassroots campaign.
This article is NOT about bernie.
He can join President Obama or make good on his wife's threats to take their ball to another team.
It is President Obama's diplomacy & brilliance that will shine thru.
I hope bernie listened rather than turning the meeting into another pat on his own back.
So far, that's about all I see him & his OR doing.
Now, back to President Obama & his coalition to do all the good they can for America, its citizens & our allies abroad.

(81,326 posts)We saw during the last election how the caucuses don't reflect the true makeup of the voters, OR accommodate many of them. The caucuses work ONLY if you can GET yourself to the caucuses in the first place.
If you're free to stick around ALL EVENING LONG, withstand all the inter-group lobbying, and hang on til the end when the vote is finally taken,
If you don't have to worry about babysitters,
If you don't have to worry about transportation (more difficult for the elderly),
If you're not snowed in and thus rendered unable to leave home (the Iowa caucuses happen in the middle of winter),
If you're a student of voting age who doesn't have homework due or tests scheduled for the next day - as many college-age students did (hell, I read a story in one of the newspapers in which a reporter covering the Iowa caucuses interviewed three college-age dudes, who had their own candidate and issue preferences. They had lots of very credible things to say, until the reporter asked each of them whether they were going to attend. One of them hadn't made up his mind, and the other two claimed to have waterpolo practice that same night),
If it means you have to stand in some cold gymnasium ALL EVENING (kinda hard when you're frail or ailing to some degree, or elderly - assuming you can even get there, physically). As I saw repeatedly, when I read reports about the caucuses, there are never enough chairs available to let you get off your feet - not only for the elderly but for young parents who are forced to take their kids with them and try to keep them corralled all evening,
Then you're basically screwed. You won't be present for the end-of-the-night voting (no, in many cases you're not allowed to arrive when it's convenient for you, cast your vote, and then leave. You have to stick around all evening long, and listen to the discussions and the lobbying by various spokespeople or campaign activists before you're allowed to vote. And the voting doesn't occur til the end of the evening. Which means YOUR vote won't be cast OR counted, and YOUR voice won't be heard.
I read enough about drawbacks and complications and other problem with the caucus system two years ago to decide that caucuses did not serve the voters. I'm thoroughly against them.
