They would have been turned over to some low-level staff people who skimmed through them looking for obvious discrepancies. The likelihood that Mittens paid very little tax in proportion to his income (assuming he paid any at all) would not have raised a red flag because it would have been almost certainly legal (the very rich have access to legal tax mitigation schemes we peons can't touch). Remember, McCain (actually, his wife) is also very wealthy and even if he'd seen the returns himself he wouldn't have found anything strange, let alone disqualifying, about Mittens' tax strategy.

Also, there is the fact that the staffers who looked at Mittens' tax returns were among the same bunch of rocket scientists who "vetted" Sarah Palin. Considering that, Mittens probably could have written "FUCK YOU, IRS!" across the last page of his 1040 form with red Sharpie marker and filled in the tax owed line with "$0,000,000.00! Neener, neener!" and they'd have missed it.

When do we start talking about jobs and health care? I don't give a flying ship about Romney's tax returns

1. Defeating Romney is the first step towards jobs and health care. Romney's tax payments or lack thereof are issues that are important to defeating him.

2. If Romney paid no taxes on a massive income, this highlights a flaw in our tax system that needs to be fixed so that the very wealthy pay their fair share to support the system that provides jobs and health care.
