Canada to Trump: Scrap tariffs, or no NAFTA deal

QUEBEC -- The Trudeau government has told U.S. President Donald Trump he needs to get rid of the punishing U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum if there is any hope of successfully renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Finance Minister Bill Morneau said that message was communicated clearly to Trump during his meetings at the G7 leaders' summit, which is wrapping up Saturday.

Trudeau said he told Trump directly that Canadians "particularly did not take lightly the fact that it's based on a national security reason" and held firm to the government's threat of retaliation.

"Canadians are polite, we're reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around."

But Trump appeared to take Trudeau's criticism personally, and denounced the prime minister hours after he departed the G7 summit on Saturday.

and make a new country...

Possibly with all of the North East as well... New York, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Maine.

Geographical contiguous, economically as important as the US, militarily about as strong.

Alaska would have to join eventually.

oh well, one can dream.

We're almost Canada. In fact, there's that little bit on the northern border that was the result of a surveying error and technically should be Canada, and you can't even get to it on land without going through Canada. So they might as well take the whole state.

but I take your point...

Maybe we could flip Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana (unlikely), Illinois, and Pennsylvania too

The whole industrial heartland. However, I think Indiana and Wisconsin would be hard... and without them...

so giving it back to Canada would be a bit complicated. But the Ojibwa might also prefer being in Canada.

I mean it ruins the entire symmetry of the border.

Makes the map hard to draw (most people freehanding the map would leave it off anyway).

But the symmetry of the border would be even better if it was moved south to Iowa.
