Traits Of A Good Leader
I remember my first job in the IT field working on a HelpDesk many years ago. My first Manager, whom we will call Karen, was very professional and seemed nice enough, but she also watched out for the company first and foremost and would screw over the employees if at all possible. Fortunately, she did not remain in that role very long—because they promoted her.
My second Manager, whom we'll call David, was amazing. Great guy, I had tremendous respect for him, he was very direct and straightforward, but could also expertly and subtly “suggest” things you should really do, particularly in terms of career advancement. “Maybe you want to think about doing …” was his approach. I always listened and acted upon those subtle hints, and it always paid off.
I was not at the meeting, but I talked to people who were. A representative of the client started ripping into David’s staff present at the meeting, and it was brutal. “You goddamn motherfucking …”
David interrupted the client rep saying, “STOP!” He turned to his staff and said, “You do not need to be here. You can leave this meeting.” The client rep exploded at him. “You don’t tell me what to do! They will stay!” He retorted, “No, they will leave. Now. Go on. All of you.” They left the meeting.
That was someone who knew how to lead.
