The anti-abortion movement used state laws to methodically dismantle abortion rights. Now, conservatives are using the same tactics to erode same-sex marriage protections. Without strong progressives in state government, our victories are left vulnerable.

We use the same tactic when it comes to guns. Less of an impact than they are having, of course. Numerous things are not deemed absolute rights. Many restrictions can come from governments at all levels.

I think I noticed a shift since around the time Obama became party leader where Democrats started focusing more on state races. We lost a lot of seats at the time, for other reasons, but I think the tools in place are proving to be beneficial.
