.................................................

As Gizmodo reports, Manafort tried to use encrypted messaging services WhatsApp and Telegram as a way to send potentially incriminating messages without a chance of them getting intercepted by law enforcement officials.

There was just one problem with Manafort’s scheme, however: He apparently had his encrypted messages over these apps backed up through Apple’s iCloud service. This is a problem because it seems that federal agents have a search warrant to conduct surveillance of Manafort’s iCloud data, and special counsel Robert Mueller’s office cited WhatsApp messages obtained via his iCloud account as evidence against him.

Cloud computing services such as iCloud, Google Drive and DropBox can automatically back up files that you create on your devices to a web storage space where you can access them from other web-connected devices.

This means that if you back up encrypted messages sent to other people through one of these services, anyone who has access to your cloud account can view them — even though they were encrypted when you sent them to someone else.......

Every device has default settings, all you need to do is un-click them. But you have to know about them first.
One more reason why the FBI is way ahead of these guys.

He gets tripped up all the time.

Don't mess with Mueller and his gang. They are always one step ahead of you.

I suppose Manafort is in jail, by now. I haven't made it through the news, yet.

My guess is with Trump now throwing Manafort under a bus, and now Manafort caught redhanded communicating with a Russian agent, Mueller may know Manafort has no choice but to turn state's witness.

What can the average person do to protect themselves from the prying eyes of the feds? Number one is don’t do crimes. Manafort appears to have skipped that step...

That was a very effective piece of social engineering. The same goes for cell phone services that are locked and unavailable to authorities. This is followed with noisy attempts to convince the public signals are private. Anyone who thinks they have the upper hand on privacy has been sold a lie. Actually Manafort should take comfort in that someone thinks this miserable POS is a big fish POS.

I’ve become a modern person who understands electronic jargon and social media and I just got my first iPhone only a year ago. I never even had a cellphone before that. Although I was very versed in using a computer since the 1990s. I used it for all my work processing travel and entertainment reimbursements for years and I use photoshop for artwork and for a time I managed a website so I know basic html and used Dreamweaver for web editing.

Now I have an iPhone, an iPad and a computer that are all synced through the iCloud and I use WhatsApp and messenger. The thing I learned with this article is that WhatsApp is encrypted and secure BUT only if you don’t store all your stuff in iCloud!

All that newfangled electronic stuff is a minefield! Your everyday nefarious stuff is much harder to hide than it used to be. Itty bitty mafiosos with their itty bitty criminal minds don’t have a chance in hell of doing business as usual in the electronic sphere.
