Ellison 'seriously considering' run for Minnesota AG

06/04/18 11:33 PM EDT

Excerpts:

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), the second in command at the Democratic National Committee (DNC), is strongly leaning towards a run to become Minnesota’s next attorney general, according to a source with knowledge of Ellison’s thinking.

“There is no confirmation tonight,” the source Monday, “[but] he is seriously considering it.”

The filing deadline for the Minnesota AG position is Tuesday, so the forthcoming announcement — if it happens — would come Tuesday morning, said the source.

Ellison was tapped as deputy chair of the DNC early last year, after losing a tight contest for the chairmanship to Tom Perez, former Labor secretary under President Obama.

A decision to jump into the Minnesota attorney general contest would open up the House seat Ellison has held for the last six terms.

He is a more intelligent version of Sanders with more depth as well. While willing to be contentious, he understands the need for coalitions.

I like his friendly and honest nature. I like his demeanor. I like that he's not angry or disheveled. I like that he speaks clearly and calmly... in a normal voice... and that he treats others with respect, instead of hurling insults at the opposition (and his allies). He's realistic. He's honest.

All I'm saying is that he's someone who truly impresses me and I wish him luck. I'd certainly be willing to support him and vote for him if I lived there.

From a conventional perspective, state attorney general is a step down from member of Congress, but Ellison is not a conventional politician. And the statewide position could set him up for run for Senate if a position opens up.

Ellison’s potential departure from his congressional seat also risks spurring a chaotic contest. A number of state legislators are rumored to have aspirations for the seat, including recently elected Somali-American Ilhan Omar.

With filing deadlines fast approaching, almost anything remains possible. For now, almost everything is rumored.

KEITH ELLISON WEIGHING BID TO BE MINNESOTA ATTORNEY GENERAL

---

But sources close to Ellison indicated the congressman, a practicing attorney before he arrived in Congress in 2007, viewed the attorney general post as one where he could be more effective in countering the agenda of the Donald Trump administration. In the Trump era, Democratic attorneys general have taken on added prominence as states file high-profile lawsuits against the administration on key issues like the travel ban and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

Swanson’s entry into the governor’s race gives Ellison another opening for the attorney general gig that fired him up just a few months ago. If he jumps in, the DFL would likely get another primary fight: Ellison would be challenging Pelikan, assuming the endorsed candidate does not step aside.
