He got away with so much for so long, he started to believe he was invincible.
That was his first mistake. His second mistake is still thinking that there's some way out of this.

(42,282 posts)you begin to believe you are bulletproof. Once you reach a certain financial level, it becomes much easier to get away with stuff that would send a 'normal' person to jail, but no one even questions you--if you're that rich you must be smart, right?
And thinking you are smart can lead to acting really dumb. Once the legal eagles start circling, the vultures aren't far behind.
