Our Donation Cleared The Lunch Debt For 75 Students

You should look for a school that could use the help. NYC schools offer free lunch and breakfast to all children. It feels so nice to do.

Our donation was inspired by Philando Castile who was shot and killed by a policeman on July 6, 2016.

Castile worked as a cafeteria supervisor at J.J. Hill Montessori School in St. Paul and would pay for children who couldn’t afford lunches out of his own pocket.

Is there a funding page or link to an organization that donates in Castille's name?
Is there one set up?
How do you find schools in need?
Check locally or ??

I would love to donate.

4. It's Hard To Find A School

I eventually ended up contacting The School Nutrition Foundation, which coincidentally, Philandro was a member of, and they found some schools for me. They said they were going to work on connecting donors/schools. Philandro's school doesn't need any money for lunches. After his death, so many donations were made in his name that they are set for years. They, the foundation, said they'd let me know but I haven't heard so I hope they are following through.

I would suggest calling school districts where you live and ask if they accept donations, which all schools do.

I live in a fairly wealthy school district, but I also know that there is a very poor population. I went there for three years - and then volunteered in a class for a year - so I remember, but I'm guessing a lot of people don't realize that.

there have been stories about lunches being taken from children who can't afford them but not much else. Philandro didn't do that. What is also missed, kids who are subsidized may be eating their only meal of the day.

Also, this is a story of a really good man whose life was taken from him by a murderous cop.

And that job can't have paid much. I know that they do provide lunches for kids around here in the summer when they're no longer fed at school, I've read about it in the local paper. And it's another tragedy of a valuable life cut short.

strange upon strange, I met the mother of the school principal of Philandro's school. It's a poor school and a struggle to keep it going but all the donations have helped in so many ways.
