Mitt Romney told reporters on Friday that Harry Reid is simply wrong about his taxes. Harry, who are your sources? Romney said. I have paid taxes every year and a lot of taxes.
Reid claims that a Bain Capital investor told him that Romney didnt pay taxes for 10 years.

Mitt, ABC is still waiting:
<...>
But ABC says Romney officials have not gotten back to them on whether Romney ever paid a lower tax rate than 13.9% despite their repeated queries. Instead, they received a rehash of Romneys already disclosed taxes and charitable donations from 2010, suggesting that Romney may have overpromised in his interview what his campaign was willing to reveal.

Mitt Romney said he doesnt know if hes ever paid a tax rate lower than 13.9 percent the rate he paid in 2010 according to the one year of tax returns he has released thus far the presumptive nominee told ABCs David Muir in an interview Sunday, via ABCs Emily Friedman.
Romney tells @DavidMuir he doesn't know if there was a year when he paid a tax rate lower than 13.9%. Says he'll have to go back and look.

(37,364 posts)Why do I vaguely recall one of his spokes people a few days ago making some suggestion that there may have been a year or so that Romney payed no taxes? I swear I saw that on one of the news programs.
PS. Willard, I want to see the original filings with your signature on them too.

(11,061 posts)Republican Senator JOHN MCCAIN KNOWS .....
When McCain was vetting potential VP running mates in 2008, it was reported that the people who were involved in the process reported that ROMNEY turned over tax returns that go back further than 10 years. McCain would have had access to Romney's tax returns in weighing his VP choice.
Given John McCain's penchant for having his aids read and review everything on a wide array of topics and then give him a short oral summary, it is highly likely that additional McCain campaign staff saw the ROMNEY tax returns and/or heard the oral summary that would definitely pointed out this fact, if true.
I would expect that if John McCain were questioned about his knowledge of Romney's tax returns in the vetting process that he would take the no comment route instead of backing up Romney's claims.
** What would be ironic would be Sarah Palin having access to Mitt's tax returns as the McCain VP choice. Just imagine Mitt telling Palin she will not have a speaking role at the Repub Convention, and what she might do in response.

(9,086 posts)He even questioned it by saying "He didn't pay taxes for 10 years! Now, do I know that that's true? Well, I'm not certain," said Reid.
So in my opinion Reid covered his tracks. If it is being rumored that Romney didn't pay taxes then Romney brought that on himself.
Sorry Romney, even if you did pay, the fact that you have not even released a full year yet is going to lead everyone who is curious to speculate. That includes politicians who are beginning to wonder why you refuse to release them considering the precedent your own father set. .
This guy, whether he paid or not is not the issue - at least it isn't a proven issue as of yet. The real issue here is why does this single citizen of the United States think he can skip the vetting process? His self importance is on display and it isn't good.
So if he isn't hiding anything because he says he paid then what is he doing then? Is he deliberatly trying to lose this? Did someone pay him to throw the election for some unknown reason?
I'm going to put on my tinfoil hat and go out on a limb here;
Maybe the republicans are setting this all up (if they win, wow - if they don't, they achieve a goal).
The goal being to get the worst of the worst, the most hated candidate, the Republican nomination. Then in future elections they can throw in horrible candidates with shitty policy but who are an ounce better than Romney. Anyone will look better to them than Romney.
And once again it will move everything even further to the right.

(9,086 posts)if that did happen the damage has been done. If the source says he lied it still doesn't mean Romney isn't hiding something or playing games. The drumbeat will continue until either he releases the returns (and if they are clean - then the dems can go after him for distracting the nation on important matters) or he just loses the election due to his snake oil salesman bullshit.

(6,994 posts)and the corporate media followed the script to a T..and we know how that turned out with Rather being fired because corporate money wanted that to happen etc.etc.....so with this tax return issue millions can change a persons mind and lie and the corporate media will do the rest.

(19,458 posts)BUT in his mind saying he "paid" those taxes, which where then offset by the most ridiculous and far-flung deductions and credits, would leave him not paying taxes in the end, ala tax refunds. He may have been paying quarterly on his taxes, but everything came back to him after his team of accountants (whom he probably pays more than most Americans make in 10 years,) worked the system, he could have gotten it all back.
Remember.. Romney is the kind of word salad. He's the most dishonest candidate since Nixon... he talks AROUND things, like the most skilled grifter around. Not to be trusted. He knows exactly what he's saying, and chooses words way too carefully. That's one of the things I dislike about him SO much. In interviews he NEVER hesitates, he gives a controlled non-answer designed to decieve.

(5,815 posts)The most encouraging thing about this whole mess to me is that Romney and his campaign have not been able to make this go away. For all of his clever talk and careful wording of statements that conveniently left out the word "Income", he has not been able to make it all disappear into the blather. And more than a few of us caught the fact that he left out the word income, referring to the taxes he has paid and we won't forget about it.
His past behavior (as shown by Rachel so nicely last night....Thanks, Rach!) should give us all warning that he is not going to give up easily on this refusal to release his tax forms. Being doggedly stubborn apparently has worked for him in the past so why should he change his strategy now? I truly believe this issue is going to be a thorn in his side all the way to election day.
When are the debates scheduled? If the issue of how much he has paid in income taxes is not a major one that should be included in the questions, I don't know what qualifies more! He usually has a nervous laugh when he talks about this issue so he should be laughing like a hyena during the debates. Hope the American people (who are planning to vote for him) can see through this and realize how much he is telling us about himself ..... without saying a word. Dishonest, lying, hypocrite.
