D-Day always brings some very deep reflection for me. My Father-in-law was among those going ashore at Normandy Beach that day. As the day gets closer, I think about it, try to imagine what he went through and what all the others went through.
He never spoke of it, never spoke of the war at all except how wonderful his R&R in Iceland was. His medals were in the back of the drawer only to see light again after he died. He was humble and brave. He was what was great about America. He would occasionally utter some very nasty words about Nazis.
As the day nears every year, I think of him and what he did that day. Except this year. This year I am thinking of how our current president will dishonor his memory and that of all those who landed on Normandy by somehow making their sacrifice about himself.
I fully expect the current president will compare his problems that he brought on himself to those who landed at Normandy somehow. The way he dishonored our fallen last Monday piqued my anticipation of how he will fuck up D-Day commemorations.
I don't want him out of office, I want him in jail for life.

(62,448 posts)he was not very political but did have a deep seated dislike of the rich.
And he did hate Nazis and I believe he would recognize this gy for what he is - a fucking Nazi.

(5,301 posts)He was a Staff Sergeant in the tank corps. His brand-new tank had a defective collar and sunk like a rock. He spent the rest of the invasion treading water. Other boats offered him a lift to shore, but without a weapon there was no point. He came out of it with a busted eardrum, but otherwise alive and healthy. He probably qualified for a Purple Heart, but never applied because so many of his friends and colleagues came out so much worse (if they came out at all).
And yeah, Trump will make D-Day about him.

(9,527 posts)I take it as a given he will make it about himself. But there's a not insignificant chance he says something similar to fine people on both sides.

(15,749 posts)They give a fascinating glimpse of the real-time events of that day as they were reported.
For years I had been believed that the Germans were completely surprised by the invasion, but Radio Berlin announcements (reported by US news services) indicate that the Germans were well aware immediately of how massive the operation was.
