They've changed their format. When I just searched for Robert Mueller on Google News right now, the first 7 articles pushed Giuliani's or Gingrich's or a Fox news point of view.
For example, one of the articles they showed me was by Newt Gingrich and it was about the 5 Scandals of the Mueller probe, and how complicated it was. Why? Because Hillary was at the bottom of them all.
You and I can search and search till we find more trustworthy sources, but this is what the American public is now being exposed to.
(The article below says the AI is trainable, but I've been trying and it isn't learning!)

1. Local and World News Powered by AI
The big headline is the arrival of AI-powered news.
The goal of the AI is two-fold. Firstly, it wants to show you more of the news stories you care about. Secondly, it aims to improve quality by only showing you articles from trustworthy sources.
This is a big step forward. Remember, theres no editorial team at Google News; the app is not a hand-picked, curated list of content. Instead, Google has always relied on algorithms to deliver the most pertinent content to readers.

(47,209 posts)how many clicks, retweets or how new the story is. After a certain amount of time when its older and should be less prominent, they change the URL slightly and have the bots retweet it again w the new URL- its like keeping a beach ball afloat. Thats a bit thing that a lot of people failed to realize- its influence on google ratings. Someone reported youd often have to go to page 3 on google to find a WaPo or NYT version of a story. Some of the sites pushed looked very real, like legit big city newspapers- but were specifically created for these stories they were pushing.

(4,483 posts)You can pay agencies who will manipulate where your website comes up in searches--my husband's business was approached by several of these companies. They use robohits to gin up popularity of sites, which then moves those sites to the top of the search results.

(108,995 posts)It's supposed to use a new IA app, that we can "train." Well, I have been trying to train mine all day and it keeps pointing me to garbage.

Just looking at how to "train" the app gave me a headache. What the hell are they doing? And why?
Rhetorical questions--we know why. But jesus.

(16,375 posts)Got all worthwhile articles. Are you doing oppo research on Google. I believe Google serves the kind of pieces you read, so Republicans or Dems doing oppo research would get very different results.

(108,995 posts)It used to be quite a few more. And you used to be able to click on a topic and see more related articles than the single example they gave you. Now I can't find a way to do that.
If you haven't used Google News regularly in the past you won't be able to understand what it's missing now. The best version for people on laptops was the original version, and they changed it a year or so ago and added lots of blank space and fewer articles. Now they've made it worse again.

(34,093 posts)how many new articles were published today? I wouldn't necessarily expect more than 4

(34,093 posts)I tend to stay away from places that add another layer of curation for me - I'd rather sort through the general pile of news (and related things) that an ordinary search would bring up, than have an algorithm sort for me.

It was up to the reader to decide which news sources and stories they wanted to read.
A year or two ago they changed and it went downhill. Now it seems much worse.

It's like the AOL landing page.
The old Finance had a bar chart at the bottom tracking the various sectors on a near real time basis. Now, it's difficult to even find out how individual stocks are doing.

(4,835 posts)Their news format was way behind the times - and wasn't really part of the whole android thing in an easy way.
If you are an Android user - I found the app already installed - although Im sure its pretty new.
They have the "Local" part back - which I think was missing for a day or two.
Give it time!
Im pyched to have the app - using G news was always a pain on the phone.

(4,835 posts)I haven't really done any heavy searching or attempts to customize -
Easy to read - loads nicely.
Give it time - they will surely be making adjustments post-deployment...seems like I've already noticed a few changes.
I have to think the majority of this upgrade revolves around getting real with Android - and less about AI - which was probably already there.
