With the story about Willard's taxes heating up in the media, I'm excited yet a little worried now about a brokered convention. People HATE Romney. With the exception of Mormons, most repugs will need nose plugs to pull the lever for him. What if they replace him with a more likable candidate, like Mitch Daniels, or a crazy person, like Bachmann or Paul?

(53,339 posts)...but I give you Don Quixote...
ALDONZA: Why do you do these things?
DON QUIXOTE
What things?
ALDONZA
These ridiculous... the things you do!
DON QUIXOTE
I hope to add some measure of grace to the world.
ALDONZA
The world's a dung heap and we are maggots that crawl on it!
DON QUIXOTE
My Lady knows better in her heart.
ALDONZA
What's in my heart will get me halfway to hell.
And you, Señor Don Quixote-you're going to take
such a beating!
DON QUIXOTE
Whether I win or lose does not matter.
ALDONZA
What does?
DON QUIXOTE
Only that I follow the quest.
ALDONZA
(spits)
That for your Quest!
(turns, marches away; stops, turns bock
and asks, awkwardly)
What does that mean... quest?
DON QUIXOTE
It is the mission of each true knight...
His duty... nay, his privilege!
To dream the impossible dream,
To fight the unbeatable foe,
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go;
To right the unrightable wrong.
To love, pure and chaste, from afar,
To try, when your arms are too weary,
To reach the unreachable star!
This is my Quest to follow that star,
No matter how hopeless, no matter how far,
To fight for the right
Without question or pause,
To be willing to march into hell
For a heavenly cause!
And I know, if I'll only be true
To this glorious Quest,
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm
When I'm laid to my rest.
And the world will be better for this,
That one man, scorned and covered with scars,
Still strove, with his last ounce of courage,
To reach the unreachable stars!

The Reagan coalition of the religious crazies and the rich is showing especially deep cracks and has been for a long time since GOP presidents, SC justices and Congresses have done a great deal for the richest 1% but abortion is still legal.
The Nixon coalition of the rich and the bigots is still holding up because the guy in the White House isn't all white. However, if they fail to dig up a southerner in 2016, it too might fail.

So, as someone pointed out earlier, maybe Romney will simply be an incredibly inexperienced, unattractive candidate, who's put forward as kind of a thesis that even an absolute clam of a man can be elected president in a post-Citizens United America.
I mean, in a way, he's the perfect automaton for the job, really, if that's what the PTB in the GOP is shooting for!

(40,416 posts)Other than the fact that there is no procedure for replacing Mitt -- he has the delegates and nobody else has enough, not even Paul -- Republicans are never going to admit they were wrong. Plus, they've invested a huge amount of political capital in anointing Mittster. They know what happens if Mitt isn't the nominee. They aren't that stupid.

(15,805 posts)and they loath Romney. The establishment Republicans can't control them, and they are too scared of losing their own seats to rein them in. If the crazies band together to force a brokered convention, they can bring down Romney and they won't care if they take the whole GOP down with him in the name of ideological "purity". Then they can pick the one person they truely adore... Sarah Palin.

(4,647 posts)The convention is only 63 days before the election and a lot of states require you apply more that 63 days out, and that is not even counting the time it would take to get the signatures needed.
Plus the new candidate will have no money and rMoney can not just transfer his money to a new person, he has to offer the many back

I'm begging everyone to search "HERCULES II LLC" "HCA" " Bain" "Medicare Medicaid Fraud " If Mitty isn't in leg irons by the convention may I suggest that ex Senator Frist be the Veep? He and Romney are partners in HCA,and those hospitals have been found guilty of Medicare Fraud.HCA and Bain's other hospitals have killed people in them,so the Prez and his veep can be "co-offers ". Look up "Frist the Cat Killer" and Romney's "French Fatal Car Accident " Google till you drop!

(1,250 posts)I took one look at the candidates the Republicans had running & I said "You can't be serious".
Herman Cain had no chance because it would force the choice between a Black man & a Black man. Just that simple.
Plus his Pokémon/Sim City economic plans made him even more of a joke (will his advisers be Pikachu & Dr. Wright?).
Michele Bachmann had no chance because she's a woman. In my hearts of hearts I don't think the 'Conservative' party would truly feel comfortable with a woman in the President position. Remember they're supposed to be the party of traditionalists.
Plus she's crazy as hell so that helped. Also her husband is probably gay (traditionalists have a problem with that I have heard).
Rick Perry looked dumb as hell & proved it at the debates when he couldn't even name the department he would cut.
This is the guy who took George W. Bush's spot as governor when Bush became President.
An abomination taking the place of an abomination. Next!
Jon Huntsman looked to be the most reasonable of the candidates but he was practically invisible.
The dude couldn't get arrested!
Plus he's Mitt Romney's cousin & served under President Obama himself as ambassador. Hard to run against a guy you used to work for.
Ron Paul is plain OLD. Too doggone OLD. Besides he's not REALLY a Republican anyway. He's a Libertarian running under a Republican banner. The GOP establishment won't back him because of that. And his racist newsletters would sink him if he ever made it to the nominee stage. He would probably wreck things even worse than the Republicans trying to reverse the world to 1800s (can't kill fiat currency when your whole modern society was built off of it). Outside of his cult he has no legs.
Newt Gingrich is the encyclopedia definition of Corrupt. His personal crap would overshadow everything he did. He was also sloppy running his own campaign (how do you not get yourself on the Virginia ballot really? Going on a cruise when you should be campaigning?). His own party turned on him back in the 1990s when he was Speaker of the House. Plus he looked like the old guard of the Republican Party & I think that would work against him in the midst of 'Tea Party' madness.
Rick Santorum looked like a jabroni & showed himself to be a jabroni throughout the campaign. 'Blah people'? 'Blah people', Rick? Really? The cat was a pure roody poo & only got as far as he did because nearly everybody else dropped out. He became the anti-Romney choice. A weak one too who dropped out of the race because his daughter got sick. You can do both/and, Rick, not either/or. You're gonna resign from the Presidency when your daughter gets sick, Rick? ROODY POO!
Mitt Romney was Richie Rich in the flesh. With a Reagan haircut & robotic demeanor. The Tea Party hated him because he was the Governor of Massachusetts AKA Kennedy Land. He couldn't go too hard against Obama on Obamacare because it is REALLY Romneycareto the disappointment of many of us here (single payer where are you?). His background as Massachusetts Governor & Richie Rich Bain Capitalist would cause him to contradict himself twice & thrice with the same sentence.
And he was the best one they got.
Sarah Palin for all her yakking was too scared to run (it would interfere with her money circuit of speaking tours/book deals/Fox News cameos).
Chris Christie was scared.
Tim Pawlenty didn't have enough (the opposite of plenty).
Donald Trump only talked about a campaign to boost the ratings of The Apprentice before the season finale.
They were stuck with Mitt Romney & the Republican primaries proved it.
He's the John Kerry of 2012. Anybody But Obama!
But you don't win elections voting AGAINST the other guy.
I know Obama's got a team & he's gonna be MURDER to deal with this time around.
This team which kept Hillary Clinton from the Presidency is even MORE experienced this time.
The Republicans know this too & I don't think the rank-and-file OR the establishment really believes in Mitt Romney.
I said way back in 2011 before anybody ran to people around me that they would put up Jeb Bush despite all the liabilities that go with the Bush name.
I STILL feel like that's what they're gonna do at the convention. Because Romney's only the PRESUMPTIVE Nominee.
But just like when you ASSUME be careful when you PRESUME. Romney ain't THE NOMINEE yet.
That's what the whole Republican National Convention is all about. Establishing who will be exactly that.
I think they will do a switchout at the last minute because Romney ain't gonna get the job done.
It usually is a foregone conclusion that the one who wins the primaries get to be the candidate but I think things will be different this time around.
And if they don't switchout, just fine by me. He'll get stomped in November right on schedule.
Switchout & potentially wreck the party. Keep him & weaken the party. Same basic outcome either way.
I'm more concerned about Obama & the Democratic Party moving in a Strong Progressive position than I am about the Republican Party's nonsense.
Obama's gonna win but what does that mean if he & the rest of the Democrats keep coming out half-hearted?
John Lucas
