Too bad so many missed her call for exactly this.
David Hogg is a smart & fair minded young man.
Always.

They don't want you to vote, Mr. Hogg; they want you to die.

(5,071 posts)Legal permanent residents (green card holders) have also been drafted. They are still required to register with Selective Service if they are between the ages of 18 to 26. They have been required to put their lives on the line for this country (and would continue to be required to serve in any future draft) but are not allowed to vote. Go figure.

(51,625 posts)This country sure is twisted and illogical. Even 18 years old can see it now.

Hmmm. That doesn't seem right.

scarletwoman
(31,893 posts)that's strictly the function of state governments.
Not that I don't absolutely love David Hogg to pieces - however, this particular well-intentioned statement isn't grounded in reality.

(476 posts)Is abysmally low.
In fact it was ranked 120th in the world a few years back.
Midterms often see only 1/3 voters bothering to show up.
I'm allllll for automatic voter registration, but it'll matter very little if voter turnout remains as low as it is now, and if gerrymandering is the law of the land, and if 10s of millions of minorities are disenfranchised, etc.

(6,196 posts)We don't have a draft. IMO we should! It would give EVERY family a vested interest in warmongering government officials.
IMO we never would have invade Iraq if we had a draft. The streets would have been packed with protesting moms, dads, sister, brothers, aunts, uncles and grandparents from all walks of life.
They want you to register for the draft to keep track of you. And so that it can be used as a punitive tool.
THEY DON'T want everyone to vote.

(13,864 posts)As already mentioned, the draft is Federal, while voter registration is State.
Do the Feds mail some sort of notice to 18 year old men?
On edit:
Some states have linked draft registration with application for driver's licenses, ID, etc..

(26,335 posts)... to Selective Service.
The restaurant chain, Farrells, would offer free ice cream to birthday club members. They got busted when a kid signed up using a fake name in order to get more free ice cream. The kid got two reminder notices - one in his fake name and one in his real name.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farrell%27s_Ice_Cream_Parlour
In 1983, the Selective Service purchased Farrell's "Birthday Club" data and mailed warnings to young men telling them to register for the draft before their 18th birthday. Farrell's blamed the situation on an unauthorized sale by a list broker, and the government announced they would stop using the list.[17]

(26,335 posts)STATUS: TRUE.
ORIGINS: In 1984, a Palo Alto, California, family received a Selective Services reminder that it was almost time for Johnny Klomberg to register for the draft. Problem was, there was no Johnny Klomberg living at that address. Or anywhere else. He was purely the fictional invention of the two boys who did live there, Eric and Greg Hentzel.
To remind 18-year-olds to register with the Selective Service, that agency had been tracking down young men through commercial mailing lists. They got caught out at this practice when they sent such an invitation to a fictional kid whod been dreamed up by a couple of young Dillingers whose dad was an
ex-Serviceman, a lawyer, and not amused.
He didnt think it right that a kids free ice cream list should be turned into a Selective Service name harvesting opportunity.
malthaussen
(17,216 posts)It is also Federal. Voter registration is voluntary, and done by state.
The capability may exist, but the two processes are not comparable.

(13,864 posts)Interesting piece by Laura Seago, at the Brennan Center, about how how voter registration might be improved by taking lessons from the Selective Service.
The Selective Services technologically advanced registration system may provide a useful model for
those who would like to modernize our voter registration system. The Selective Services experience
shows that automatic voter registration is feasible. It also shows that the government agencies that
could help expand and improve our voter rolls already have the necessary infrastructure, technology,
and experience to do so.
It is not surprising that the Selective Service has deployed technology and other resources to identify
and automatically register young men for the draft; the government has an obvious, central interest in
its ability to mobilize an expanded military in time of crisis. The ability to participate in the electoral
process is surely just as central to democracy. It is disconcerting that the government has not availed
itself of the same technology and commitment to improve our voter registration system. The
government has shown it can effectively and automatically register eligible men for the draft. It
should now use the same tools to automatically register eligible citizens to vote.
