I'm pleased that Harry found happiness despite all the challenges of having grown up royal with its restrictions and having to bury his mother while still a child. His face was radiant today and that's enough for me.

(9,710 posts)witnessed. The pomp was cut back considerably and Meghan made her mark on the royal family. I found no awkward moments from beginning (4:30 a.m. for me) to the end..

(8,200 posts)I could help from being struck with the massive gulf between Bishop Curry's message of love and Trumps message. The contrast could not be more distinct. Rather than being dedicated to unifying the nation in our love Thump spews a message of hatred and division that have become the hallmark of the vast majority of today's Republicans. Rather than binding up our wounds he vomits a continuous stream of insults and outright lies to inflame the worst aspects of human nature. Rather than appealing to our higher instincts calling the nation to strive for betterment of all he appeals to lowest and takes delight in the acrimony that he sows. It is not difficult to see in him the embodiment of the worst of failing of mankind as spends his wasted talents churning out ridiculous tweets dripping with division, lies and unmask hatred for his fellow Americans. He is destroying any hope for unity and is the antithesis of bedrock upon this nation was founded, E pluribus Unum. This is the guiding principle which has fortified the nation through trying times and the promise of its future. A house divided can not long stand.

(129,541 posts)and I expect that if/when they have children, that will be a wake up call in that regard. In fact, I think his being an uncle to little ones was probably an eye-opener - seeing the fragility of life (although obviously that family would have plenty of nannies and governesses).

(46,166 posts)I didn't much care about all this wedding stuff and the royals. I roll my eyes. But when I woke up this morning I found it on demand and watched some. It's so obvious that she's the rock. I liked the American sermon. Now life goes on. I'm sure they'll make a dent in history even more than today.
Positive waves, Moriarity. Positive waves.

(9,178 posts)when I think about all the money spent on that wedding, and the upkeep of the royals in general, it seems a bit obscene.
The royal family is a bit like having your appendix thickly plated in 24 carat gold and put on display in your house.
It serves no purpose, reminds you of a painful time in the past (you had to have it out for a reason), and is incredibly expensive.
Those kids should've popped round to an authorised registrar, done the deed, and then donated all the wedding money to the continuing "beneficiaries" of centuries of brutal English colonialism.

(2,434 posts)by far worse in terms of wasteful and crass. At least the Royals, especially Will & Harry, give back and give of themselves. Plus, it would appear, very few British subjects are grousing. Many of us are upset at the waste of our govt.

(9,178 posts)Oh, I gripe about that too.
The Brits are certainly entitled to spend $80 - $90 million dollars on a wedding, but, it's kind of a face slap to the progeny of the indigenous peoples of Africa, India, Australia, etc. who were enslaved for years by the crown.
It's like England saying, "Know we were wrong in the past, but DON'T CARE. Watch this wedding, LOLOLOL!"

(2,434 posts)not a British subject. Still, we pay enormous salaries to pro sports figures and even larger amounts to those on the film screen. I truly think we would be wiser cleaning up our own backyard before we complain about our neighbors. This is where I pay taxes and believe I have a right to complain how they are spent. I also believe I have the right to tell people how wasteful they are to spend nearly $1000 on tickets, parking and food to one football game. I'll leave it to the Brits to decide what is wasteful to them.

(905 posts)My mom was a vehement anti-monarchist. I am a huge reader, especially non fiction, and she would carry on when I would follow the lineage of royal families. You can't understand history without the knowledge of the placement of royals and of their inbreeding.
Having good friends from the UK I realize that now that colonialism is all but gone the only draw to their tiny realm is the draw of travelers from far and wide.
My mother softened a bit when she saw Diana taking the boys to AIDS shelters and other humanitarian endeavors. They didn't go to boarding school and they went to usual childhood haunts like fast food.
Seriously, who would not like to party with Harry?
