Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf is receiving praise this week after a man was denied service for making comments many perceived to be racist and Islamophobic.

The unidentified man was mocking a Muslim woman for wearing her niqab in a California location of the coffee chain, SFGate.com reported on Sunday. Video of the incident was posted online by journalist CJ Werleman.

"I said is this Halloween or something," the man is heard saying.

"Why did you say that?" the woman responds. The man later says, "Because I want to." The woman asks if there's something wrong with her and if the man knows she's Muslim.

Since - in the past - anyone who dares to defend a woman's personal choice to wear a hijab has been shouted down. This woman is wearing a niqab (which covers most of her face).

People can have negative views of it without thinking it's ok to treat people like that guy did.

have led people to treat women (generically), at least in a manner very similar to how that guy did.

There have been some pretty vicious threads here on that matter. The flavor of hatred was slightly different, but it was still hatred directed at practicing Muslims (generally), and Muslim women who choose to cover (specifically).

I'm curious to see how the hypocrisy plays out. I'll be pleasantly surprised if we've grown up, and none of the ugliness that has popped up here in the past rears its ugly head.

3. It's about time racists get some of their own medicine

Good for Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. Racists have gotten away with murder and now they're going to be on the receiving end of refusal of service, only for a good reason.
