(13,596 posts)partly doing it to avoid people bitching about the channel being changed to sports. We bought the TV to promote the place as a sports bar too. There were four other smaller TV's around already. Bar staff was told that anyone at anytime coming to to watch a game or race had priority on that TV.
Invariably, it would be on FOX "News" when I came in in the late morning. Some regular early drinkers got pissy about it being changed a few times so I put the lock on it. They figured out it was me pretty much and made me take it off, but they did behave better after that.

(7,754 posts)parents not only removed Fox and Fox Business, etc. but also per-programmed their parents TV to automatically go to Maddow and Lawrence and John Oliver and Stephen Colbert, etc. I can see them watching and going, what is is program? Did you put this program on ? It's possible they might even get interested. Maybe put in Nicole Wallace first since they will recognize her from Fox and think they are on the right channel.

(7,725 posts)It's literally banned in some European Countries and even in Canada it's restricted. Refreshingly, they won't allow it on most hotel tv channel listings there. These are brilliantly educated human beings.
Why the razz-ma-tazz in the USA as to allowing it to continue deliberately confusing the citizenry with false narratives? If rich folk need to hear this type of stuff...why don't tey make it a pay per view, Rich Folk Channel. 1000.00 a month and they can double down on whatever nonsense they need to hear.
Meanwhile, we scale down fox ent. (like they did MTV....ahem. RUINED such a great channel. Use whatever they did there) and stomp out a news outlet that sows dissention in the ranks, with false reporting, and a proven track record of encouraging greed and ugliness to their watchers who validate agreeing to that line of thought. bc hey, they heard it on cable news(?).
Corporate reform needs to happen. There is so much to do if we can keep winning.

(6,930 posts)I would never watch that channel, however it does play on some of the TVs at my gym.
There are many, many tvs there. It is not my business what others watch. Usually, I see ESPN, CNN, NBC, HGTV, ABC, and Fox all playing on the dozens of tvs available.
I am free to watch whichever I want. Somehow others should be denied that? I would be furious if someone denied me that right. I ignore Fox if it happens to be on in front of my machine. Lots of other tvs I can watch, and anyway I have my music.
I get very uncomfortable when I see cheering threads here about restricting other peoples right to watch what they want. Some here have become just like the right wingers. Do we want to be them? It is disturbing.

(2,201 posts)If somebody on some freakish republic site had said that they had blocked their parent's access to any news channel other than fox, most of us would say they were assholes. But, since this guy is screwing over his parents in a way that we like, he gets 'high fives'?
No. Just no.

(2,201 posts)That doesn't seem right to me. Their son gets to screw over his parents for their 'own good', and it's ok?
I actually don't really have that big a problem with someone being in charge of everybody else's decisions.
I'd actually be fine with just having one person being in charge of deciding what's for everyone else's own good....on one condition..........that person is me.
No committee (there's no way I could trust the other members to vote the right way), No advisors (they may try to cloud my judgement). Just me.
Kidding aside, something is either right, or it's not. Something wrong doesn't become right just because it's our side doing it.

(6,916 posts)And worse, Fox is propaganda designed to divide America to get votes for GOP billionaires.
Fox doesnt deserve the same treatment as news shoes that care about the truth.
There is no Fox equivalent on the left. None. The government shouldnt censor Fox. But citizens sure as hell can tell everyone they know that Fox is billionaire-controlled and bad for America.
Captain Stern
(2,201 posts)We can do that, and we should do that. But, that's not really the same thing the guy we are talking about on this thread did, is it?

(6,916 posts)Fox exists to exploit old white people to get votes for the Koches and Murdoch and other GOP billionaires.
We should be exposing their agenda. Blocking your parents TV is an excellent first step. The government shouldnt ban Fox. But some restrictions or advisory would be useful. Just like with chemical toxins: we regulate them. We should regulate mental toxins like Fox and Limbaugh too.
Captain Stern
(2,201 posts)So... basically... he goes to his parent's house.....fucks with their cable (that they pay for), so they can't watch what they want to watch? Then, he posts it up on the Internet so everybody can see how he tricked his parents into not being able to watch what they want to watch. Wow...what a genius he is....he can work the parental control. I'm sure there are great things in his future.
I guess actually talking to his parents would have just been too much work.
Fuck this guy. I hope he dies in a fire. (and NO, I don't really mean that i hope he actually dies in a fire....I just added that for effect) So, if he actually does die in a fire, I don't want to hear any shit about it.

(2,201 posts)Fox does harm America, but their son screwing over his parents definitely doesn't make him a patriot.
If learning how to operate a remote control makes someone a 'patriot' these days, we should probably just retire the word.

(38,317 posts)They watch MSNBC for news, I think, and PBS. Both our dads occasionally watch sports.
Hearing stories about other people's parents, I guess we're blessed. But I can't imagine them turning to the dark side.
They learned a long time ago it was no use talking to us about anything on television.
"Did you see....?"
"No."
Our own television plays DVDs and Netflix. That's all it does.
