Trump Flipped an Entire Party's Core Beliefs

May 13, 2018 at 8:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

Jim VandeHei: “Reversing one of the basic assumptions of politics, Trump has shown you can radically change a political party’s core beliefs and brand overnight. Only six years ago, the GOP’s Romney-Ryan ticket was preaching the evils of Russia, the virtue of free trade, the sin of deficits. With no debate and little resistance, Trump has flipped an entire party’s core beliefs. Turns out, voters are far more malleable than we thought — and candidates and presidents can change minds overnight.”

“We always assumed party affiliation was a prerequisite for leading a political party, and some political experience a must. Trump was a liberal Democrat and he hijacked conservatism. The hunger for something different is unmistakable, partly because a big chunk of voters have had it with conventional politics and politicians. No reason another exotic Republican — or third party, or even a surprise Democrat — couldn’t do the same.”

want. It's only money to them and the poor ones think there is some kind of check in the mail or a fantastic job. It's a sick group of disturbed people banded together.

The Republican Party's core beliefs are tax cuts for the rich and demonizing immigrants.

Trump didn't flip them, because they don't really have any core beliefs, except relentless greed for money and racist bigotry. They just go along with whoever floats to the top of the scum on the swamp and parrot the party line. They'll just fall in line and hope the line leads to the feeding trough, where they can pig out at taxpayer expense. If Trump had said, let's invade Australia, or let's let only Bavarians immigrate, or let's go back to hunting whales, they would dutifully fall in line.

Republican Party Platform:

Plank One: Cut rich peoples' taxes.
Plank Two: Fuck everyone else!

Still intact.

Am I supposed to believe it's only been since 2016 that the GOP has taken money from questionable sources?

Conservatives/Right-wingers have been courting Russia for years now - anti-LGBT, anti-women, anti-POC voices in America have been meeting/greeting and plotting with their Russian counterparts for a long time.

Trump was never a liberal - he was someone who took full advantage of liberties and freedoms available to him without once caring if they were available to all. He would easily pay for an abortion because it benefited him - and could just as easy deny it to others. That's not liberal - that's typical authoritarian hypocrisy. And Trump is now who he has always been, so never a liberal - just a typical right-wing authoritarian. Trump feels entitled and believes he should be able to get away with things other people shouldn't be able to do - simply because of his money. Again, typical Conservative/Republican thinking. And because of his skin hue - Typical white supremacist thinking.

Calling Trump a liberal is based on the mistaken notion that a liberal is amoral. Typical right-wing thinking. So if Trump pays for abortion, sleeps around, cheats on his spouses - he must be a liberal to right-wing minds. But now that he is so clearly their guy, then all is forgiven because - Jesus! Same way they explain away all their hypocrisy.

To the conservative mind, a liberal can commit adultery and they are a threat to the American way of life. A republican can do the same, but they're forgiven, so a person of god, chosen, etc..

Of every single ideal the Republican party has embraced, overtly or otherwise, for 50 years or more. He is the natural endgame for every policy that party has stood for. We saw this coming.

And don't let anyone ever tell you different.

It was a demagogic, racist campaign and I doubt that anyone would want to emulate it?

Republican Elite: Core beliefs are unbounded greed and Machiavellian methods to achieve such.

Republican Masses: Core beliefs are fear and subservience to authority figures.

Neither one is moored in Christianity or traditional conservatism.
