More than 300 schools in 40 different states registered for Stand for the Second a nationwide walkout organized by New Mexico 18-year-old Will Riley.
The event comes just more than a month after students staged a mass walkout to protest gun violence in wake of the Valentines Day school shooting in Parkland, Fla.
Protesters nationwide left their classrooms and remained outside for 17 minutes to honor the 17 people gunned down in the halls of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School exactly one month after the deadly attack.
Thousands of students participated in the March 14 walkout for gun safety, but Riley said it does not reflect the views of everyone his age.

This is why we can't have nice things.

I'm guessing they've never seen any of their friends carried out of classrooms feet first...

(30,481 posts)Only one planned walk out that whole time. The Iraq War.
You must have been in an area with a very active youth. That's awesome. Sorry the activism meant so little to you. The people at the Iraq War walk out knew what they were doing. We marched to the local recruiters office, got on the roof, and unrolled a banner.

(7,398 posts)It really is not necessary to walk out in support of an amendment that already exists. The original walkouts were not against the second amendment but against the idea of no restrictions, and also to urge protective actions to prevent violence. Having said that, they can walk out to protest most anything I suppose.
Pretty much just pushing back.

(100,080 posts)Dozens *FOR* the 2nd amendment, versus hundreds of thousands *AGAINST* it. They are outnumbered. And we spell our protest signs correctly.

(11,588 posts)I still laugh when I remember that planned event in DC the right-wingers were trumpeting to "take back our country" and a handful of people showed up. One woman called the right-wing press that was there (in a trailer to live-stream the huge event as it happened) and claimed she had hoped to be there but due to the rain around the area she lived she was "land-locked!" The "patriots" that showed up to "march on Washington" included a guy pushing a walker and a few people (including a woman) riding motorized disability carts. There were a few who were not disabled, at least physically and they looked like "militia" rejects. All had backpacks and totes for their "arms" and probably meds.
After all the hoopla advertising this event well in advance, it was a hoot to watch this band of rejects moving around (marching on Washington) so menacingly.
Wasn't there also a convoy planned that would bring truckers from everywhere to shut down Washington, D.C.? and only a few confused ones showed up looking for the others?
