Kimmel dismisses Michelle Wolf criticism: 'Hire a juggler next year'

BY AVERY ANAPOL - 04/29/18 06:30 PM EDT

Late night comedian Jimmy Kimmel came to Michelle Wolf’s defense over the backlash to her set at the White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA) dinner.

Wolf, a former “Daily Show” comedian, sparked a wave of backlash from conservatives and members of the media, many of whom said her comments about White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders in particular crossed a line.

Some, including former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci, have even called for the WHCA to apologize to Sanders.

Other comedians have come to Wolf’s defense, including Kathy Griffin, who praised Wolf for her “fearless” performance and said that she did what she “was hired to do.”

Mostly on Twitter.

Paul Krugman appears to be busy this weekend, but a lot of other good thinkers on media and American public debate have commented.
This is a big story, so perhaps no surprise.

For two years I have been tracking a speech pattern among American journalists, in which they try to explain to us — and perhaps to themselves — why Donald Trump’s campaign to discredit them is not what it seems, or no big deal. In this post, I am going to show you the pattern (mostly) and comment on it (a bit.) It started during the 2016 campaign…

It's worth reading the whole thing.

http://www.vulture.com/2018/04/michelle-wolf-sarah-huckabee-sanders-whcd-joke.html

Not surprisingly, though, it’s the jabs that Wolf threw at Sanders and other Trump staffers that are getting criticized today, not just because some of them were funny but because they legitimately stung. To acknowledge what actually made the smoky eye line funny meant that some of the people in that ballroom had to reflect on the fact that they either lie, enable liars, or act nicely to liars because that’s what they sometimes have to do to get the information the public deserves to know. That’s the sort of situation that makes people itchy.

But here’s the thing: If the worst thing that happens to you while you’re working for Trump is that a woman from The Daily Show says a few mean things about you while you’re wearing a nice dress, eating a free meal, and drinking some wine, you are still having a better day than a hell of a lot of people in this country.

Thread by @joshtpm:

I wasn’t there. Didn’t watch any of the WHCD. The jokes I’ve been shown don’t strike me as a problem. But it’s incredibly disappointing to see the WHCA throw their comic under the bus like that. It’s actually pathetic. Did they really imagine ANY comic wld create unifying ...
2/ in the sense they’re now describing? That seems ridiculous to me. Political humor is inherently barbed. Given the chronic shitshow of the last 15 months it is all but unimaginable that any legitimate comedy wldnt be barbed. This is sad and pathetic.
3/ It’s also worth noting here that the President sent Sanders as his stand-in. That’s the person who’s there to be roasted. That was clear going in. Again, the standard the WHCA is now setting is that it should have been comedy that was **unobjectionable** to Trump and ...
4/ his supporters. When you put it that way i think it’s clear how impossible a standard that is.

Exactly. DC press corps has no sense of perspective. They seem not to grasp what a deeply disruptive presidency this is. Quite possibly a transition to a very different phase of history, and democracy at the edge of a cliff. And when they get skewered, they whine.Sam Wang added,

This horrendous statement should be a good call for a recommitment to not playing footsie with this administration—instead valuing reporters who do deep dives on its members and their effect on us, then asking fearless questions, relationships be damned.

George Carlin, Lenny Bruce, Mort Sahl, Whoopi Goldberg, Wanda Sykes, Margaret Cho, Richard Pryor, Dick Gregory, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and John Oliver are just a few who have mastered the art of butchering a sacred cow and revealing its putrid guts to the rest of society. If the WHCA had wanted inoffensive saccharin they should have hired Jay Leno -- or SHS herself.
