(11,652 posts)Its antibiotics, big deal. Can get Z-packs at any corner pharmacy in Mexico with no prescription, should be that way here.
Antibiotic resistance is bad enough without that...
I better toss out my Fish-Mox!

(5,586 posts)We've just learned about antibiotics resistance in the last 10 years or so. Prior to that, anything could've happened.

(102,405 posts)sans prescription as in Mexico. NO, we have enough antibiotic abuse and subsequent resistance as it is.

(34,138 posts)For over 45 years I have had an infection in my left hand that recurs periodically. My old doctor thought it was an antibiotic resistant staph or strep. So whenever it flared up, he would give me samples of the newest antibiotics to try to knock it out.
When my old doctor retired my new doctor realized that it was not a bacterial infection. Instead it is a herpes zoster infection that lives in the nerves. No wonder the antibacterials never worked! Now as soon as I feel the tingle in the nerves indicating a flare up is coming, I take an antiviral. Works like a charm.
Knowledge of antibacterial resistance has been known for many years prior to my original infection. The problem is that we are running out of new antibacterials to throw at the resistant strains so it is much more serious than was thought all those years back.

(66,468 posts)Excessive prescription and treatment with antibiotics, expecially when they are not indicated (i.e. viral infections, fungal, etc.) contribute to antibiotic resistance, an alarming and growing problem in the medical care field.
If patients were left to themselves, they would treat every little sniffle with antibiotics. I get requests for antibiotics from patients with viral infections all the time. I set them straight pretty quickly.
I have zero respect for any medical provider, MD, PA, or ARNP, who throws antimicrobials at every patient who walks in the door.

However, over the last several years, they have been giving me steroids and other meds along with the antibiotics. Because of the other meds, I have been able to hold off on office visits by a day or so. I now usually only need one course of antibiotics instead of two.

Fucking insane. Yes, let's give out a drog that stints their growth permanently FIRST, and then if that doesn't clear it up, we'll try some amoxicillin.
The medical world is insane

(34,138 posts)When I had the flu in February everybody asked if I had gone to the doctor for an antiviral. No, I just dealt with it until the point when the flu symptoms were over and I was feeling congestion in my lungs that indicated a possible bacterial infection. Then I went to the doctor and got an antibiotic to treat the opportunistic infection - those symptoms lasted for longer than the flu had but finally cleared up.

(20,590 posts)when you have an infection that is resistant to antibiotics. Such bacteria developed because of antibiotics and their over use. These bacteria are no longer confined to hospitals but are now in the community. It can happen to anyone at any time. A small cut can lead to amputations and death when the antibiotics no longer work. We are headed into the past where infections are concerned.
When you take antibiotics, bacteria learn how to become immune to that antibiotic. The bacteria shares that information. This has been known since antibiotics were first developed. Read up on how it is done because it is really fascinating.

(39,343 posts)I couldn't even tell you the last time I took one, but as far as giving out meds goes, this doesn't sound too bad and was probably happening during the Obama admin

(1,997 posts)Many physicians prescribe meds after phone consults, but almost always it is for established patients with a history of certain problems. For example people who have had repeated sinus infections know the symptoms, and most doctors won't make them go into the ER or wait until Monday if they have symptoms over a weekend.
What does bother me is a physician lying to the American people about the health of their president. This clearly happened and should not be tolerated.

(7,813 posts)I get a sinus or ear infection roughly every 18 months. I go in, tell them my symptoms and what has worked in the past (the Z Pack).
But, I have always gone in and seen a doctor or PA. I have never once asked for questionable meds. It never even occurred to me to just call and ask them to phone the pharmacy for a new prescription. I did it once in the past for BP med renewal.

(25,595 posts)These were Obama holdovers who wanted a quick antibiotic without seeing the doc. Z packs are so routine. I used to be able to get Z packs if I just called my doc.
What happens with me, is I get pneumonia easy. It starts with bronchitis and I need to quick get the antibiotics in before it turns into pneumonia. This person had probably been seen by Dr. Jackson before.

(4,483 posts)He never should have been nominated, of course, but these "improper dispensing medication" complaints against him are just not that damning. I've worked all my life for and with physicians, and this is common practice. Doctors routinely prescribe (or give samples of) medications their friends and co-workers request, without examination. Hell, my own family doctor, with whom I have no professional relationship, will prescribe for me without having me come into the office, simply because he knows I'm a responsible adult.
Further, in many countries in the world, Z-Packs and other antibiotics are freely available over the counter (which is not a good idea; this is a big part of over-use of antibiotics).
His drinking while on call is a serious matter, but the drugs? Not so much.

That's where you take back your unused prescription drugs and given them to Dr. Ronny Jackson.

To be sure, it's Jackson's fault -- he's clearly a dick. But there were lots of dicks in the military when I served. The secret of surviving if you're a dick is to keep your head low and don't swing out into the wind. People are bound to notice that you're a dick.
Not sure what Jackson was thinking when he accepted the appointment. He could have just stayed on as WH physician, smiling and lying about the president's physical condition, and put in his 30 and retire as an admiral. Now he's going to be lucky to get out with an honorable discharge.

(24,055 posts)...after hours by phone, I politely tell them that the very best I can do over the phone is to guess at their child's diagnosis, and that I would hate to guess wrong. Most are persuaded by that explanation.
For those that treat adults that are well known to you, I can see that it could be somewhat different, but there is no way I am going to treat an infant without being certain what is going on.
I would absolutely NOT work for an organization like Teledoc.
