Larry Nassars Boss Accused Of Assaulting Students In Practice Exam

Two more women have come out against the boss of disgraced coach and convicted child molester Larry Nassar, alleging the man sexually assaulted them while performing practice medical exams, according to court filings from Tuesday.

Police arrested former Michigan State University dean William Strampel in late March on two misdemeanor counts of willful neglect of duty, one count of misconduct of a public official and one count of fourth-degree criminal sexual misconduct after four women accused him of sexual misconduct. The latest allegations now bring the total number of women accusing him to six.

Strampel reportedly lured the two young women into becoming models for practice examinations while he was the dean of MSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine, according to Tuesday filings from the Michigan Attorney General’s Office obtained by CNN.

“Strampel conducted a full examination, including a breast examination, an anal examination that included the penetration of the anus, a pelvic examination that penetrated the vagina, and all were conducted in front of a small group of medical students,” a complaint from the office stated.

What an utterly despicable set of human beings.

3. Many women have experienced a bi-manual pelvic exam.

It's not an uncommon procedure, and allows the doctor to manually feel the uterus and even the ovaries. My wife once described having one from her gynecologist. Uncomfortable was the word she used.

Now, what happened in this case might well have been a sexual assault, but ob-gyn physicians do such exams quite often, as many women will tell you.

And most older men have experienced a rectal prostate exam. That's also a common medical procedure that involves digital penetration. It's somewhat uncomfortable, but not all that uncomfortable. It's not done as routinely as it once was, since the PSA test became almost universal, but it's still done often.

So, maybe there was a sexual assault in this MSU situation. I don't know. It might also have been a demonstration of the techniques used in such exams for medical students. I just don't know.

Strampel is already facing allegations from four women who accuse the former dean of groping multiple female students, as well as soliciting them for nude photos and sexual acts in exchange for favorable treatment.

I wanted to mention that such exams are often done, though.

I'll leave the question of the guilt of this particular person to a jury.

taken without their knowledge. This a local story, where I live, and your post is the very first time I've ever seen a defense of this man. Not even MSU is defending him.

7. I'm not defending him. I'm explaining a common medical exam.

I did not say a word in his defense. If he is charged with a crime, a jury will decide about guilt.

9 children and 6 of whom are in the medical profession plus my Mom who was a nurse, it never dawned on me that anything about it was out of the ordinary, and out of line. I've belonged to Kaiser Permanente almost all my life, except during my time in the military, and when you go for a Pap or a pregnancy exam, you often see whomever is available in the OB/GYN dept, and not your Primary Physician. I'm going to ask my sister whose a doctor about this, but I don't think this type of exam is unusual particularly since these days at least half the people performing them are women.

I can see how it could easily be misused, and it may well have been misused by that doctor. But, it's not the procedure that constitutes sexual abuse in itself. It's the intent. I imagine every medical student or intern has to learn to perform that exam. Someone has to teach it. Used just as an examination procedure, it's not sexual at all. Misused, it certainly could be abusive, of course.
