Media Matters Says No Boycott for Joy Reid, Blasts 'Right-Wing Chicanery'"Theres no corrective action they seek here. Just revenge," Angelo Carusone tells TheWrap

Media Matters for America will not launch any advertiser boycott against Joy Reid. The non-profit watchdog groups president Angelo Carusone told TheWrap on Wednesday his group will not target the MSNBC host after mounting pressure from those who have called out an old blog post of hers as being bigoted toward the LGBT community.
In a public Twitter conversation on Wednesday, Carusone answered a question from TheWrap, saying that Reids past post will not trigger a Twitter boycott from his group. He called the effort to draw attention to Media Matters on the topic of Reid bullst and right wing chicanery.
I hope people can separate, especially media figures, can separate out difference, said Carusone. Theres no corrective action they seek here. Just revenge.
Further, those leading the charge on this issue are actually terrible on LGBT issues. If we accept the standard they are putting forward, then by extension doesnt that mean many of their own media figures should be punished too? he added in a series of Twitter replies.

All women, PoC and libs must be silenced.
If you have not been pure from your date of birth, you will be exposed and drummed out of public life and the party as well I guess.

Al Franken forced out of the Senate and out of public life and now a great journalist Joy Reid.

(11,742 posts)In general I agree that this issue doesn't appear to be legitimate. However, Progressives are typically driven by wanting to correct injustices and to be the best they can be. That makes us vulnerable to manipulation in the same way that fear and resentment about a fictional "golden age" make conservatives vulnerable to manipulation.
When you have allegations of a violation of a social value that is significant to a progressive mindset (I.E. respect for LGBT people or respect for women in Franken's case), it will certainly set off the reaction of those people who are most strongly affected by the violations. There is always a possibility of over reaction as a result. Franken, likely got a bad deal, but it wasn't "one picture", it was a series of accusations (true or not) that were not able to be ignored.
The difference between Progressives and Conservatives on these issues is that Conservatives appear to care most about power and winning over ethical behavior, and Progressives care about ethics more than political victory.
Our homophobes are not better than their homophobes (and I am not saying Reid is a homophobe). Progressives want ALL homophobia to be eliminated and we start by looking inward (for better or worse).
Like I said. I do not believe that Reid is homophobic or that she has negative ideas about LGBT people. She had blog posts years ago, that she acknowledged, criticizing Charlie Christ, which disparaged him using comparisons to homosexuality.
I consider myself a decent person and a progressive, but I was taught growing up, that you shouldn't throw or run like a girl, that when something was "gay", that meant is was bad. While I have tried not to use those phrases as disparagement for many many years, they are in there (in my psyche). I remember when I was 19 and my sister had a very good friend who is gay and she brought him home on vacation (he was from out of the country) and I said something like, "that was so gay" not describing him but something I though was a bad situation. My sister pointed that out to me, especially because I really liked my sister's friend, he is an awesome guy, and here I was using the core of his sexuality to denote something bad or unacceptable. The same way when some people want to disparage a man, they call him a "cocksucker" or we call people "retarded", when they have made a decision or done something that we did not find to be intelligent or appropriate. Again, as progressives we seek to eliminate those ideas from our lexicon and our attitudes, and there are those who sincerely (because they have been so affected by the issue) want to have little tolerance for those uses of language. Then there are those who seek to exploit the issue for political gain.
Ultimately we have to balance our progressive identity with critical thinking and always with skepticism for attacks coming from right wingers and other people seeking to manipulate us. This certainly requires that we do not knee jerk and call for people being fired, but we certainly want to look into a situation.

(28,270 posts)When I was in the USAF it was illegal to be gay. They had undercover SP's cruise gay bars around the base to catch gay airmen and slap them with a dishonorable discharge.

The right for gay people to be married just happened a few years ago and these rights are under constant attack by the same people attacking Joy Reid!
Democrats like Joy Reid are the reason these laws are history now.
The same fucking party that still fights to deny gay folks their rights are the ones pushing this takedown of Joy Reid!!!

(11,742 posts)The point I was making is that it is part of being a Progressive to be aware of and to respond to things which violate the ideas that we hold dear.
They have been used against Progressives because it seems that people on the conservative side have no qualms about using any means to attack Progressives.
So what is the solution to the situation?

(28,270 posts)So why don't we judge her by the way she has lived her life since then?
And by all means, lets judge her accusers by the same standards!
Caliman73
(11,742 posts)I think that we need to let the evidence show what happened if possible and I agree that we should accept her for what she has done in the 12 years since those blog posts as well. We should certainly not let rightwingers dictate the narrative.
We also already judge her accusers by a similar standard but our support and patronage is not something, said accusers rely on for theit own careers. As I said in my posts, rightwingers do not care about ethics or integrity. They care about winning. Unfortunately we cannot be true to our ideals and pursue that same path. We can certainly take the most open minded approach possible, but we can't excuse behavior just because the person doing it is on our side.
