A Cal State Fresno professor who posted disparaging remarks on Twitter about former First Lady Barbara Bush will keep her job, university officials said Tuesday.
Randa Jarrar drew swift and widespread condemnation when she called Bush, wife of former President George H.W. Bush and mother of former President George W. Bush, an "amazing racist who, along with her husband, raised a war criminal."
In a letter to the campus community, Cal State Fresno President Joseph Castro called Jarrar's comments "disgraceful" and "an embarrassment to the university," but said they were protected under the 1st Amendment.
After reviewing the tweets with the university's counsel, administrators concluded that Jarrar, who teaches creative writing, did not violate the school's policies and was acting as a private citizen when she posted the comments online.

(9,426 posts)is a cause to lose a job now? Only in gop minds. I have to shake my head when the talk about the Bush's "73 year love affair" is gushed about. The old coot cheated on her many times. One woman, Jennifer Fitzgerald was his companion on world wide trips for 10 years. He wanted to divorce Babs and marry her, until he was told he could never be president as a divorced man. (Reagan did it!) So this lifelong love affair is all hooey. Next the gop will talk about how in love the tRumps are! Babs was mean as a rattlesnake, and racist too.

(11,841 posts)Her job is not. Even though they're saying she gets to keep hers, if theyd decided to let her go she likely wouldn't have had a case against them. Cal State Fresno has already lost a lot of donors because of this. She could have been critical without being insulting. When she mentioned the University she removed the "private citizen" argument.
I remember Barbara Bush being the first person in such a position to show People that touching someone with AIDS wasnt going to kill you. She hugged a small child who had AIDs in a picture that was seen around the world. This at a time when people were thinking you could catch it from a cough! Sure, she's no Michelle Obama by no means, but she also wasnt an echo chamber and she was pro choice.
This is GREAT fodder for the RW & believe me they'll be using it nationwide. Look how they already talk about "liberal professors". I'm against stuff like this no matter WHICH side is doing it. I imagine thats a minority view here.
