A 6-point win for @DebbieLesko in a district so red that it's maroon? Arizona's Republican officeholders must be hyperventilating. #AZ08

Suburban, dual income, working family. Surprise districts are the same. Shocking to see the Blue in Sun City. Looks to be the earliest Sun City Developments.

When I lived in AZ this and the East Valley (heavy Mormon) were the safest spots. Tucson and Flagstaff more blue. I would guess the district directly to the east would be an easier pick up.

Sun City. I think S.C. is the red area between the blue of Peoria and of Surprise, but it' s a wonderful map anyway.

Edited to add: I think the blue and dark blue in that area are El Mirage, a working class and heavily hispanic area.

Knocked on doors Sunday for GOTV in Peoria part of the district. Dems we talked to were very motivated. My impression was that they were initially surprised to see us but happy we were there. Helped a few to remember where polling place was etc. So important to get every vote in November.

If anyone out there is hesitant about walking precincts and knocking on doors, don’t be. Most people are really nice when they hear you tell them how important their vote is to you. The fate of this country hangs in the balance. If you’re not running,
then you should be walking

to draw our congressional maps here in AZ. Surprise, no? One of only two states, I think, with such a progressive system. It's fraught with much contention and litigation -publicans hate it- but it's not gerrymandered by them.

Until recently AZ had 5 Democrats and 4 Republicans in a heavily Republican state.

A citizens referendum set up a constitutional amendment that doesn't allow the state legislature any role.

A non partisan group is appointed and they have to follow very specific guidelines like country lines or geographic boundaries. The district I was in was decided by 180 votes.

If every state followed AZ Congress would be deep blue.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redistricting_in_Arizona

The AIRC was created when voters approved Proposition 106 in 2000, 56.1 percent to 43.9 percent. Proposition 106 amended the Arizona Constitution to create a bipartisan commission independent of the state legislature that would be tasked with redrawing congressional and legislative lines following the decennial census. The commission's mandate is to draw districts considering six factors and explicitly omitting from consideration a seventh factor. The six criteria the commission attempts to satisfy, in descending order of importance, are:
1.that they are in compliance with the U.S. Constitution and the Voting Rights Act,
2.that districts are roughly equal in population,
3.that they appear compact and contiguous,
4.that they respect communities of interest,
5.that they incorporate visible geographic features; city, town, and county boundaries; and undivided census tracts;
6.and that they are electorally competitive as long as the aforementioned criteria are satisfied.[9][10][11]
