Six-term Rep. Doug Lamborn thrown off GOP primary ballot by Colorado Supreme Court

On Monday, the Colorado Supreme Court ejected six-term Rep. Doug Lamborn from June’s GOP primary ballot for the very red 5th Congressional District. The court ruled that Lamborn's campaign had hired a circulator to collect petitions who did not meet the state's residency requirements, which meant that the signatures he collected were "invalid and may not be considered." With those signatures thrown out, the court said that Lamborn did not have the 1,000 valid petitions he needed. Lamborn told the Denver Post's Jesse Aaron Paul in response that they were "still digesting the opinion," before he promptly hung up.

It's not clear what legal options Lamborn has to try and save his career. However, it's too late for him to get on the ballot through another method. While Colorado allows candidates to qualify for the ballot if they win the support of at least 30 percent of the delegates at the state party convention, the convention already happened and Lamborn didn't compete there. The ruling leaves state Sen. Owen Hill, who won the party endorsement at the convention, El Paso County Commissioner and 2016 Senate nominee Darryl Glenn, and a few minor candidates on the primary ballot for this 57-33 Trump seat in the Colorado Springs area.

Lamborn is my rep and he is a spineless, gutless, Trump-yes-man. This is GREAT news. It cracks open a pretty blue door in this very red town.

a six-term congressman. Sounds like he'll lose his seat because of some low level sloppiness that wasn't caught.

Good for you/us, though, Colorado Blue.

Maybe the good people of Colorado Springs will learn that they've never had a Congressional Rep who cared about them, only money, power, the military and evangelical Christians.

Worked for Murkowski in Alaska, but that may not translate to a more populous area. Lamborn is too late to be a write-in candidate in the primary.

Once again, this is why you get candidates for each and every race. Certainly the Republicans should hold onto this seat, but a decent candidate should be able to make hay out of Republican fecklessness: "The Republicans are picking their candidates with the same care that they've been running the country for the last two years. And with just about the same amount of consideration for Coloradans, which is none. You want the federal government responsive to your needs and your issues? Elect a Democrat who believes government has a role in our society."
