I need to update my phone. I haven't done any price comparisons yet, but I suspect that the iphone is more expensive.

(146,325 posts)I don't use either type of phone, but my wife has had both. I'm her tech support guy, so I have to fiddle with them sometimes. Neither are particularly hard to use or set up. I just don't need a smart phone.

(3,608 posts)Android...and that is what's kept me at Iphone. I'm disgusted with the prices...I am browsing myself right now. I'm going to switch carriers to get a deal on a phone.

(3,181 posts)I've always had Androids. My tech-impaired husband stubbornly went and got an I-phone out of the blue. It cost an arm and a leg, of course. Then he asked me how to use it. I told him to ask the people at the store he bought it from. He didn't learn a thing from his last laptop purchase.

(43,049 posts)The good news is that I have an LG android phone that I bought new for around $120 and it does what I need, and there are cheaper ones that work reasonably well. You could spend up to close to a grand for the best phones, though. They are awesome, but don't save you much money. LG, Motorola, Samsung, and others make great phones that can push up into Apple pricing. Most of the stuff you can do on an Apple phone you can find an equivalent Android app.
The bad news is that each manufacturer loads its own version of android, and has bloatware. The phone company you buy the phone from adds its own bloatware, too. And updates are spotty. You can go nuts with the choices at all price and performance levels.
Probably the best android phone is Google's own Pixel 2, which is controlled by Google and gets the best stuff first with no added crap. It starts at well over 600 bucks, though.
I'd suggest you get one of the lower to mid-priced android phones from your provider and see how you like it. If you do like it, you can always upgrade.

(9,766 posts)The interface is a piece of cake and so reliable. I have a Samsung Galaxy S7. Got it brand new from someone who was selling it for $350. I absolutely love it.

(17,276 posts)Mainly because it has a lot more storage. But beyond that, the apps work so much better.
Here is the way to get a deal on an iPhone. I hope this deal is still around: I bought an iPhone SE at Target for $199.00, cheaper because it is subsidized by Tracfone and made for use with a Tracfone account. I've had Tracfone for years as my carrier and I was able to roll over the minutes I had to get started.
If you call Tracfone or chat with them online, they will not admit to being able to work with iPhone. It's like the sales people are not allowed to say so they can sell the phones they are selling. But if you ask them if you can use Tracfone with your own iPhone they will say yes.
Funny how it worked. But for $200 I have a nice iPhone with a 12 mp camera and lots of memory. The cost for 180 minutes/ 180 texts/180 mb data is about $17.99 for THREE MONTHS, set on auto renew, and if I run short I can renew early. Plenty for my relatively light usage.
Love it. Can you beat that price?

it does come with a lot of bloatware, maybe more than other brands. but hasn;t been a pronblem so far.

(601 posts)and a Google Pixel 2 phone ($650). I'm an Apple person otherwise and have had several iPhones. Google makes the transition about as easy as possible. All of my contacts, text messages, and cross-platform apps transferred perfectly. While it's perhaps not as sexy as IOS,I've found Android to be just as functional and the learning curve to be very small. The Pixel 2 is a great phone with a great camera. Best of all my monthly bill is less than 1/3 of what it was with AT&T, the coverage here in NYC is better, and there's no need to purchase roaming data packages prior to international travel. Just my $.02, but recommended.

(6,600 posts)I just got a (Verizon) LG VS980 Android refurb for $65, with a few scratches on the back. One in near-mint condition is $75.
Look for companies that have sold thousands of refurbs. I've been using refurbs for years & I'm 100% happy with them, & they're a heck of a lot cheaper than an iPhone.
