...a nonwhite person cannot or will not be a legitimate customer

The inquiry these fictitious people made was simple: They asked for local restaurant recommendations. We tracked whether hotel employees responded and also analyzed the content of the emails from those who did respond.

Across the range of responses, racial discrimination was clear. Overall, hotel employees were significantly more likely to respond to inquiries from people who had typically white names than from those who had typically black and Asian names. But racial bias did not end there. Discrimination also happened in many subtle ways.

Hotel employees provided 20 percent more restaurant recommendations to white than to black or Asian people. Employees’ politeness also varied by race. When responding to white people, employees were more likely to address them by name and to end their emails with a complimentary close (e.g., “Best,” “Sincerely”) than they were when responding to black or Asian people. And employees were more likely to go “above and beyond” in their service: They were three times as likely to provide extra information — even when the initial inquiry was just about restaurants — to white than to black or Asian people.

Our research suggests that this belief — that a nonwhite person cannot or will not be a legitimate customer — can indeed worsen discrimination in service delivery. In a follow-up study, we emailed nearly 2,000 hotels and made a similar inquiry about local restaurants. But this time, in addition to varying the race of the inquirers, we varied whether they made clear their intention to stay at the hotel. Indeed, making customer status explicit helped reduce discrimination against minority people. These results are in line with the recent incident at Starbucks: We see that service workers do not apply the rule that every person is a potential customer deserving the same level of service.

Since Reagan courted racists at Neshoba County, the GOP has inflamed racism to get votes for billionaires. Today, Fox and Limbaugh and other GOP propaganda arms continue to try to stir up racism.

The best thing you can do to improve race relations in America is vote Democratic. Vote for any Democrat. Any Democrat is far better than any republican.

And if we really want to improve racism in America, we must stop the propaganda of Fox and right wing radio.

Perception and individual experience can be hand waved away with "Oh that's just your opinion" or "That's just anecdotal." or "That's rare."

Hard, verified facts are more difficult to dodge.

Witness the black cops involved in shootings, or in other racially charged situations.

When these kinds of sensibilities are ingrained into society, POC learn to treat their fellows unfairly, too. The attitude is contagious.

Black cops are NOT shooting and killing unarmed white people with the same reckless abandon as is happening in this trumpPOSpotus era with white racist cops slaughtering AA men, women and children with vicious efficiency. True, violence related to black on black violence/crime happens and the self hate responsible for a majority of this violence IS BECAUSE self hate has been ingrained in AA's, this is so true, historically.

Yet I have seen remarkable recovery from the days where most AA walked with a sense of self hate and their head down. White people treat each other hatefully, this is true also, yet their hate for each other and black self hate pales to a certain insignificance compared to the RACIST WHITE HATE being exhibited, again, as has been the cyclical history of our racist culture/society. I grew up with white idiots thinking they were superior to all others. Had some in Vietnam, they were not so superior, trust me.

black cops often get shot at (and even killed) or challenged by white cops due to purported "mistaken" identity and/or refusal to believe the black cop is a cop - especially if they are undercover/plain clothes and/or are off-duty and show their police badge/ID as proof.

I have often been ignored or walked past by waitstaff in a restaurant when a man or a group of men are present. The same thing in a meeting or a group discussion. What the man will say is apparently much more important. When the man gives a gratuity, they must believe it will be more substantial. (Don’t servers stop to think that moms have kids in your shoes, and are often very generous tippers?)

Adding to my lack of value, I'm sure, is that I'm not thin and beautiful. So therefore I must not be worthy of their attention (I'm looking for another glass of wine or to contribute to the discussion, not a date).

I have a little test for waitstaff. I usually pay for dinner with my husband because I have a card with better rewards. So I put my card down and I either hand the check to the waiter or I have it clearly next to where I'm sitting.

The test comes when they return with the card and slip. I would guess a full 90% of the time they hand it to my husband. If they give it to me (the one who gave them the card with a clearly feminine first name on it), they get an extra tip. I don't tell them this, but it's just something I started noticing and then decided to make a point of noticing. So I give an extra reward to anyone who takes 2 seconds to pay attention. And I'm already a good tipper.

and not the proper response to the OP, but I was simply trying to express my frustration when dealing with being a woman trying to live in a man’s world. When my husband recently passed, we had some business accounts with AT&T and Social Security. I was actually accused by some of these phone reps of killing my husband (in a subtle way).

When I shop, I intend to buy something, whether it is a car or furniture or whatever. What I don't do is dress up when I shop of do stuff like make sure my hair was cut the day before. I don't look like a slob, but I don't look like a high roller either. I have had junior sales people literally thrown at me by more senior sales people. I love the look on the senior people's face when the junior person has nabbed a big commission right before their damned eyes.

14. Did the study collect data on the races of the employees?
Sat Apr 21, 2018, 10:27 AM
Apr 2018

Hotel employees come in all types, including most minorities and immigrants. Here's something that may be a surprise for my white friends, minorities can be racist to each other. And immigrants can be openly hostile to American-born minorities since many immigrants don't think of us as real Americans. And a lot of racist idiots think we don't tip, then treat us rudely hoping it will become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Having a Biblical first and last name, I can fly under the radar of racial ambiguity over the phone. All they would know about me is that I'm probably Christian or maybe Jewish or Muslim. Jewish people think I'm Jewish, Christians think I'm Christian. Muslims think I'm Muslim.

On a side note, my coworkers is a black African immigrant married to a black American woman. We had an interesting discussion about race to put on forms. He puts black while his wife puts African-American. He doesn't think of himself as African-American since he wasn't descended from slaves brought to America. I check the box for Asian-American or Asian although my parents write in Indian or Indian on the blank space for other. And we had a chuckle of the nonsensical question of "Where are you from?" we get from people who want to know our race since people move and can be from a different country from their ancestors.
