Bernie Sanders spoke to a crowd of black folks and didnt screw it up this time
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) not only rocked the house here at the National Action Network conference Friday morning, he may have been the crowd favorite among politicians whod stopped by over the past three days.
Audience members shouted, Ber-nie! Ber-nie! as the Rev. Al Sharpton escorted him to the podium. The atmosphere had the feel of a presidential stump speech, even though he told another reporter at the conference that he hasnt made up his mind on running in 2020.
The theme at this years NAN conference reflects on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who was assassinated 50 years ago. Sanders, who was criticized for what some thought were disparaging words about former President Barack Obama at an MLK event in Jackson, Miss., earlier this month, struck a chord with the packed room here when mentioning Dr. Kings role in fighting desegregation and the passage of the Civil and Voting Rights acts

(44,173 posts)This time we don't have to waste time explaining "what Bernie really really meant to say was this," as we so often have to do.
Sounds like he learned from the criticism of some of earlier more tonedeaf remarks, and that is great!
Sounds like a excellent conference! Thanks for the report. Best of luck in his 2020 run.

(5,272 posts)so is the white's first rhetoric...what rhetoric is that? I can accept that this is the impression people have, I just would like to know what its based upon.

(17,984 posts)That is what matters in the end, not how someone arrived at it. Even the article said that black turnout for Bernie wasn't as strong as was anticipated. If the dominant impression is that Bernie is not concerned with black issues, then that is something we need to take on board in the discussion. Heck, it should be something we discuss with every candidate.

(6,916 posts)No matter what you think about Bernie (and I love the guy), even his haters have to admit he is FAR FAR FAR better than ANY GOP politician on race.
Because the GOP propaganda machine amplifies racism in America, to get votes for billionaires. That courting of racists is what got this president elected.
If you care about fixing racism in America, your number one goal should be kicking the republicans out of office. Organize! Get out the vote! Vote Dem.
